I bought an Alienware R4 about a year ago and it cost a load, but I've definitely loved my time with it. At this point, I'm a lot more stationary and I'm in need of a little extra cash so I'm looking to sell it, and possibly build a desktop. My first thought was to buy another laptop, but they're kind of expensive new, and I don't feel comfortable buying used.. Also, I already have a case, cpu cooler/fan, 2 monitors, a mouse and keyboard and an old PSU, which would make the build a little cheaper!

Was wondering if you guys thought it would be cheaper to get a laptop, or to just build a semi-new rig? I was looking at getting a 1050 2gb (not sure if the 4gb is worth an extra $100). I have a 1070 in the alienware, but I definitely don't take advantage of it.. I play a lot of old games, and sometimes world of warcraft, will to live online, league of legends, fortnite, etc. So I don't really think I need anything crazy to run those. Looking to basically make a budget build that I might be able to ugprade later as funds become more available.

let me know if you need any other details and thanks in advance!

definitely build a new rig.

laptops are not gaming machines unless you spend a ridiculous amount

We need you to fill this out...
For any component you already have, we would need links to them, for compatibility reasons.

Budget:
More specific use (what games, what programs):
Planned time until purchase:
Do you need an Operating System?:
Do you have any specific preferred components?:
Do you need a sound or wireless card?:
Do you want stock cooling or do you plan on overclocking?:
Do you need a monitor? mouse? keyboard?:
Zip code/location? (Shipping costs):

Sure, I wasn't sure if it was going to be worth it so I didn't take the time before, but here you go:

Budget: 800-1100 (prefer to stay below 1k though)
Planning on purchasing within a month, depends on how long it takes to get an honest offer on my laptop, however my best friend sold the exact same laptop a month ago so I'm confident it wont take long.
I do need an OS
Idc about brands of components if thats what that's asking, but I guess it would be cool if there was a theme in colour, even black or white.
I would need a wireless card
Stock cooling is fine, I don't OC or mess with settings very much.
I have monitor, mouse, keyboard and case

And I'm in Canada, Ontario so I'd be going to a local canadacomputers, NCIX, something like that.

My case: https://www.bitfenix.com/global/en/products/chassis/aurora
My Cooler: https://www.amazon.ca/Cooler-Master-Contact-Cooling-RR-212L-16PR-R1/dp/B01KBXKP8W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1523634651&sr=8-2&keywords=master+hyper+212

That's all I have, I think! I'd want a new PSU now that i think about it, the one I have is really, really old.

Don't fking do this... Recommending a Z370 with a locked processor is shoe-on-head dumb.

8400 with the 2nd or 3rd cheapest mainboard you can find is your best bet

Please stop posting with your misinformation. Going up $1 doesn't get you any better product. Learn how to tell for yourself by actually understanding the components to look for. (power phase modules, vrm heatsinks, southbridge chip capabilities, memory speed controllers, etc)
