Hey guys,
This isn't technically computer building related since I'll be in the market for a new compact laptop, but I'm sure you know about this stuff anyways.

This will be for school and looking for decent light gaming capabilities.

So I've been looking around and most laptops around my budget either have a GTX 1060 or GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q (the new low power version from NVIDIA, I think it has a 10% decrease in performance compared to the regular model but apparently still packs a punch for the buck and it's quiet).

The GTX 1060 is an upgrade from that 1050 Ti but it seems to bring the price a little over my budget (sadly getting screwed with the conversion rate as I am from Canada).

Basically, was looking for your thoughts on the GTX 1050 Ti Max-Q. (Currently looking at the Ideapad 720S 15" if any of you are curious, gonna wait for some deals to come around)
The only game I currently play is CS:GO, and that's not even 5 hours/2weeks but I still want the option to game and have good performance.

Thanks

if all you play is cs:go the 1050ti works.
1060 is abut 70% better then the 1050ti iirc.

Yeah that's pretty much the only game I take part in nowadays. I know it's definitely not the most resource intensive one, but still.
I know the 1060 is quite a bit of an upgrade, but it also upgrades the budget price lol

I'm still gonna look around but do you think it's really worth a couple hundred bucks more to get a laptop with the 1060 instead?

theirs benefits of less heat with the 1050, more battery power, etc.

if your a settings whore then 1060 would be worth it. such as triple AAA games. not league, csgo, you should be fine with overwatch. but games like Destiny 2, Doom, Crysis 3, etc. can make the difference between higher settings and not.

I mean you could downclock+undervolt a 1060 til it has 1050 performance and it would sip even less power than a 1050, no? Even with the wider memory bus I wouldn't be surprised if it did consume less and without a doubt produced less heat.

then keep that full 1060 performance in ur back pocket for when ur plugged in. Win/win. More time on battery than the 1050 + way more performance in the wall.

The most resource intensive game I'd play is definitely csgo, I don't have Witcher, Destiny, Doom, etc. I'll definitely get better performance on high settings than I'm getting right now with a 1050Ti but I'll keep an eye out if I ever catch a nice laptop with a 1060 at a reasonable price.

I'll keep watching for deals to come out and if I manage to snag a good compact laptop with a 1060 at a similar budget I won't hesitate. But it seems that a 1050Ti would do the job for my needs otherwise.

e/: Thank you all for the input so far btw! Appreciate it
