Iirc the aura will trigger once combat is initiated.
Simply take him into battle, and the aura should trigger on it's own.

To answer your question: No, your merc doesn't need to be a certain level.

see guys ive been playing d2 since christmas of 01, i know a thing or two about a thing or two, but i shit you not the aura will not come on. ill go buy a normal diff one and works fine... cant get that holy freeze to come on.. been letting him kill shit and get hit by monsters for half an hour..

so im guessing a nightmare mercs aura will not work in normal diff if your only level 24? sum1 know different?

Sometimes it takes up to5 mins for the merc to as I like to put it, power on.

exactly.... defensive mercs activate defensive abilitys after being critical hit

so maybe it takes 2-3 hits taken untill he activate the aura
