I'd like to start making montages of sorts, putting together a few video clips into a short 3-4 minute video, maybe with a music overlay and some other images.

Anyone have any suggestions? My experience as of yet is a few hours fiddling around on YouTube and Twitch, and crop skills on MSPaint.

If you want something more simple and easier to use there are a lot of options, like:
- Shotcut
- Filmora
- VideoPad Video Editor

If you want profesional software go with:
- Adobe Premiere (along with After Effects)
- MAGIX Vegas (previously known as Sony Vegas)

A long time ago I used to work with Vegas and it was the one I liked the most.

Try the ones you can, look for the one that you are more comfortable with (don't use 'X' or 'Y' software just because someone else uses it)
No one will be able to tell if you edited a video with 'this' or 'that' software, especially not if we are talking about simple edits (wich seems to be the case here).

I hope that helped.
;)

It did, thank you. I had initially downloaded one and before i even opened it I saw it had tons of issues and complaints so removed it. Will look into these when I have a chance. Thank you.

GIMP is free and pretty much like photoshop. It was originally written for Linux, but it works just fine on Windows.
