I always would suggest swords for beginners without much fg. They aren't as expensive as axes/daggers. You can use them for the beginner class, samurai and pally so you are set for awhile :)

Swords EE
Leather/scale EE
Str/life charms

Maybe try out the fishing as well so you don't have to shrine as often.
