so i just learned how to drive a stick but the ride is a bit jerky when i downshift, need help with proper technique.

i was watching youtube, many said the proper way is to put the clutch in, add a blip (500-1000rpm), downshift, add gas while releasing the clutch.

so as a newbie, thats kinda hard which made me think of an easier way. why dont i put then clutch in, downshift first, and then add the blip, before i release the clutch. in my mind this is a quicker way, but asking around if this will damage anything?

so youtubers say:
1) clutch in
2) add blip
3) downshift

my way:
1) clutch in
2) downshift
3) while clutch still in, add blip

thanks

Well as long as you are driving a synchronized gear box either way is fine.

But to be honest. Just let the clutch out slower on a downshift = problem solved and you wont sound like a tool driving around town.

Pretty much this.. The only time I rev match is when I'm down shifting at highway speeds to accelerate.. And even than, it can be argued as "unnecessary and douchy"

Your way is slower and defeats the actual purpose of the rev match which is to ease the job the synchronizers are doing which speeds up the shift and reduces wear. Your way just results in a smoother engagement. If you shift faster and come off the clutch before the revs drop too low you won't have to add that blip.

A slight rev match is only douchey if you have loud exhaust and are trying to get attention. I rev match in my vette all of the time because I can. It also builds muscle memory for heel/toe if you are doing it right.

Only time I rev match is when I atomic neutral drop the fuck out of a rental.

The rev I'm matching is usually somewhere in the ketchup.

Just practice blipping the throttle and don't worry so much about the Rpms. Listen to the car and it then becomes muscle memory at some point. After a solid week or two you should start noticing its second nature.

Just get use to driving a manual car. No need to learn how to rev match when you're just beginning. I rev match everytime I downshift, even into first gear I rev match. It's just second nature to me

i dont think you have to nor its super necessary. i just thought your ride will be smoother if you rev match. im still learning though.
