Could have been anything from the scientists just being wrong, to faulty equipment. Hell, could have just been a faulty stir-plate that a graduate student swapped out once discovered to save the embarrasment.
There was a guy up for a Nobel Prize who claimed to have a perfect anti-rejection drug for rats. He claimed 100% acceptance of skin grafts. When examined it turned out he had literally been painting the rats fur to fool the scientific community. People do stupid things thinking they will get away with it. The way you find out frauds is by making sure experiments are repeatable and any variance can be accounted for.
