It's smaller and can be turn on either sides. Hopefully it will be universal for all phones and instead of current USB A, B and micro.
Some USB-C port also has Thunderbolt PCI-E which can be used for external monitors or external graphic cards.

A device that implements USB-C does not necessarily implement USB 3.1, USB Power Delivery, or Alternate Mode.
Could easily be 3.0 without higher wattage.
Just think at the A, B and C USB types as the actual size and how many pins there are.
While if it's version 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1 is the actually speed.
With the additional pins from the type C it can also have these alternate modes: DP, Thunderbolt, MHL or HDMI.
