Quick question:

People say that too much mf = bad if you want to find rares, because they’ll roll unique instead - makes sense.

However, wouldn’t more mf also cause you to find more rares, because magic items will roll unique instead of magic?

Anyone who can clear this up for me, I appreciate.

PS - how much mf would you want if you were mfing vlld items in normal (like lvl 9 rings etc). Obviously kill speed is not a factor in normal.

You're right, more mf means less white, less magic, more rares, more uniques.

Yes, some items would roll rare instead of magic, but many items would roll set instead of rare.
Overall, if your %mf exceeds ~250%, less items spawn rare.

Some figures when you kill a level 20 unique monster :
% mf | chances for a ring to be rare
0% | 5.84%
100% | 10.32%
200% | 13.42%
250% | 14.69%
280% | 15.43%
289% | 15.625%
300% | 15.618%
350% | 15.59%
400% | 15.56%
500% | 15.52%
1000% | 15.41%

Figures would change for other items, and from other targets.

I'd say that ~250% mf is usually what you want for finding rare items.

Too much mf isn't bad because items will roll set pieces.
Too much mf is bad because your killing speed will suffer, resulting in less item drops.
