Budget: $800 -- i'd prefer to stay as low as possible, unless there are reasonable gains to be made by going over. i don't plan on upgrading anytime soon afer this build
More specific use (what games, what programs): -- virtualbox, mpc-hc, handbrake, torrent client, starcraft 2, borderlands, older games. mostly browser heavy, CPU intensive stuff
Planned time until purchase: -- 60 days
Do you need an Operating System?: -- nope
Do you have any specific preferred components? -- SSD, AMD CPU, optical drive
Do you need a sound or wireless card? -- nope
Do you want stock cooling or do you plan on overclocking? -- stock
Do you need a monitor? mouse? keyboard? -- nope
Zip code/location? (Shipping costs): 14615

Will you complete mail in rebates? -- yes
If so, may we go over-budget if rebates bring you within budget? -- yes
How much hard drive space do you want or need? -- 2TB with room to add if under budget
Will you use wireless or wired internet? -- wired
Will you overclock CPU and/or GPU? -- nope
Any special requests or useful things to tell us? (Specific case, need lots of storage, audio etc.) -- SSD, AMD CPU, optical drive, 16GB of memory

Do you prefer any specific colors for the build/computer case? -- black
Do you prefer a window on your case? -- nope

this is my 2nd desktop build, the last one being i put together in 2007 on a super low budget. i'm not a huge gamer, but its limitations have been very apparent lately. i appreciate anyone that is willing to take some time and reply :)

i couldn't edit the OP anymore :( but i have a question for you guys

what do you guys think a reasonable budget is for my OP? i don't make a ton of money, but my desktop is pretty much my life, so i guess it shouldn't bother me at all going over budget by a couple hundred if it makes me happy. would increasing my budget by a bit greatly improve the build?

Just wait until 4-5 days before you intend to purchase. The prices, rebates, deal, etc., change on a daily if not hourly basis.

Anyways, this is the closest to your budget I would wish to go...

The main problem is the RAM prices.

no, the main problem is you don't know how to pick parts.

i believe this one is more suited to his needs
very hard to justify a 1060 6gb for 'starcraft 2, borderlands, older games', and the 1400 over the 1600 for virtual machines and 'CPU intensive stuff'

you aren't going to see a diff between 1060 and 1050 ti in those 2 games, at the very least
