I have an existing one, mainly for trading purpose. Apart from that, when i run more than just trading, there is a slight lag. I am considering getting an upgrade.

I dont intend to change my dual monitors, disc writer, speakers, keyboard, mouse and HDD (500GB). So that brings me to the question, what is the key hardware that needs upgrading to improve performance? I am assuming graphic card and perhaps more importantly motherboard? I am running i3 at the moment, which at 4 years back was relatively decent for the budget i had.

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium Home Edition
Monitor: SyncMaster 953BW/953GW,SyncMaster Magic CX953BW/CX953GW(Analog) [NoDB] (H9LQ300170)
Graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550Ti
Network adapter: Qualcomm Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20)

Not familiar with overclocking, not done this before, but happy to explore:

Sorry, i meant trading in the US stocks. So trading plus possibly D3/hearthstone.

Just a SSD would be sufficient? You reckon the rest of the build is fine even the motherboard?

Currently i am on 2xs 4gb ram. So maybe 8gb ram each should do the trick?

your whole operating system runs off your hard drive,
switching to a SSD (a LOT faster than a HDD) will increase your overall performance.
your gpu/cpu combo is plenty for what you do + no need to change motherboard if u dont change cpu
8gb ram could be helpful assuming you have a bunch of tabs open.

The i3 and 8gb ram should be sufficient for the minor use you have. Try reinstalling windows, defragging, or clearing space on hard drive if full. If that doesn't work, try getting an SSD, will make startup/loading fast. Start there, that's my suggestion if you aren't looking to spend any $$ on a new computer.

He's running Windows 7, 8gb of ram is plenty. It's not like windows 10 that uses 4gb doing nothing.

Windows 7 seems to be giving me some problem. For a start, it doesnt auto update a few months back when i re-formatted. I had to google to force for an update. The PC hangs quite often. When I am loading Hearthstone, the game play will lag intermittently. It doesnt feel smooth. I can live with the slower startup and loading, but after 5 mins (while i let everything settles), the game itself still lags.

My harddrive has 173gb free space out of the available 500gb. Should be sufficient i reckon.

no need to upgrade from sandy bridge i3 to i7 for what hes doing hes better off going straight to ivy bridge at that point anyway.
to be quite honest a fresh installation of his os would be the best thing he can do
if you don't meticulously maintain it like an autistic kid like i do they do slow down quite a bit over time, especially in 4 years, on an HDD

no. sandy to ivy is not really a big difference anyway

i7 2600 is a huge upgrade from his dual core i3 2120

will help with gaming and what's hes doing

and plus his title

literally fucking says

"Need Advice On Getting A Budget Cpu" (ivy i7 cpu not as cheap as the sandy bridges one, and not worth it anyway, negligible gain in performance diff between them). he wants budget cpu upgrade

which is why you recommended something out of his budget?
i dont think he needs a new cpu
his is like
plenty for hearthstone/d3
his os is probably a dumpster fire
fresh install and/or SSD fix
