I'm starting to feel a slight bit of respect for Prince Charles!

just a flex by the EU commission to get more leverage in the upcoming negotiations.

Why not? They have the power and the UK has made a huge show of bad faith. Make them pay for it because they can!

They also have a lot more to lose than canada or Japan in not making a deal

sure. I just wish both sides would negotiate in better faith. does this really have to degenerate into an antagonistic pissing contest?

ikr? why doesn't the EU just let (former) members cherry pick what they want and what they don't, why do they keep insisting on making a deal that does NOT encourage other members to leave?

if you constantly delay negotiations, because you have no clue what you have a polical mandate for, AND what kind of concessions are even remotely realistic, what do you expect?

I get that, and understand why the EU had to flex like that. All I'm saying is that I wish both sides can, in the future, find a way to negotiate and divorce in good faith.

"Good faith" does not exist for countries, or yes, it could be open, understandable at the first degree, negotiations...

UK's leverage would be the threat of fiscal dumping, so much good faith to expect from EU regarding this.

The UK has pretty much squandered any good faith at this point. It's taken them years to even give terms and they are the ones giving an impossible Trinity of demands

Feels like we're finally shipping back a Trojan horse.

Hope that we can continue to cooperate with the UK, much like we cooperate with Canada, SK or other allies; and that if they ever desire to return we let them in under the same conditions as every other member state.
