Hey guys I currently have a Dell optiplex 755 I don't play any games but the wife wants to play sims 4. I am using onboard graphics with a crap dual core processor & 4gb ram.

Budget: 100.00 usd

Ram: don't really plan on upgrading currently

Gpu: would not mind getting one for overwatch or Gta5 when I'm bored.

Cpu: can only go up to q6600 I think..

So with 100.00 currently using a Dell optiplex 755 mini tower, I'm thinking about using the 100.00 for a new motherboard / cpu combo using current ram, hdd, psu. Or something that will support my old cpu until I can upgrade it.

Any ideas on what I should aim for? Moving from arch linux to gentoo so I would like a little upgrade room for The processor compared to my current board I'm pretty sure it can only handle a q6600.

Any help will be welcome :) never really upgraded or pieced together a pc before & feeling a little lost lol.

Just checked out pc part picker & noticed my ram is a little old lol. So I guess I'll need a motherboard, cpu, ram, case

I should be able to get another 50.00-100.00 so maybe a 150-200.00 budget for motherboard, cpu, ram, case (unless I can use current case) not looking for anything fancy just something better than what I have now that I can upgrade throughout the year to play a game or two :)

Don't waste your money, save up more or don't upgrade imo for that budget.

Alright I'll go with that.

Do you think I should maybe get the best processor for the optiplex that I can? Just noticed I can pick one up for 10.00 in my area :) might search Craigslist for a graphics card that will fit in my case for around 10.00.

Think I might have luck finding a cheap pc I could upgrade a little more than my current one on ebay for around 150.00?

Edit: what about something like this & a friend has a 750ti I can have for 20.00.

Nvm can't link eBay sites.

Would the i5 be a little better than my current dual core?

• Dell Optiplex 990 (Good Condition with heavy scratches mostly on one side of the case)

• 8G Ram (Will max out at 16G)

• Intel i5 Quad Core Processor 3.10Ghz

• Dell ATI Radeon HD 5450 512mb Video Card (Dual Monitor Support)

• New DMS 59 to DVI cable

• 250G Hard Drive

• DVD-RW

• Dell Keyboard and Mouse

• Power Cord

• Windows 7 Professional

This thing is below 100.00 within my budget :) just not sure how good a i5 is. Would use the rest to upgrade the psu & buy a friends old 750ti for 20.00

Won't be buying for a month or so, might go with something like this just for compiling speeds of the i5 is much better than a optiplex 755 processor :)

Edit: did some research and a gtx 750ti will fit, might look into buying one of these or the next model around Christmas time along with my friends 750ti & holding off until my birthday to upgrade the psu or sell my current pc for some money towards a new power supply. :) won't be the best but hopefully the wife can play sims! & compile times should be a little faster :)

Based on your computer's factory specs, there is no way you are even booting any of those games. If you are on that tight of a budget, consider a combo with a new Pentium G4600 (supports HD 630 gfx vs the 610 in the 4560), and 8GB of ram. Would be about $200 USD https://pcpartpicker.com/list/G7hGpb
However, the standard HDD for those were 80gb and only ran on the SATA 2 controller (incredibly slow by today's standards) and would take several minutes to load any of those modern games. You would seriously want to consider upgrading that to avoid a likely unplayable experience. Western Digital Blue or Seagate Barracuda would be a good option for around $40 USD for a 1TB HDD.
Lastly I don't know how much faith I would have in a PSU from over a decade ago, that could be a literally ticking time bomb. If you can get together as much as $400 USD, you could build a new rig that would run much smoother and still provide decent support for future upgrades. Such as: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pdDhhq

Should be no need to upgrade PSU with a 750ti, it will be fine with the OEM.

Got a new psu when I got this pc last year. :)

Was looking into it and it seems like the pc would be able to upgrade a little further than my current one.

Think a i5 (can upgrade to i7 with the board) and a 750ti would be ok for sims4 & maybe wow on low settings?

Might go with the following

Dell optiplex 990
8gb ddr3 ram
I5 2400 3.1ghz processor
500w psu
Gtx 950ti
Windows 10

Should be able to piece together for pretty cheap :) not 100% sure about having enough for a 950ti at first. Might buy a few Dell's and see if I can resell them & save up a bit extra for a 950ti to throw in :)
