I'm having a hard time getting my head around spending $500 for just one piece of the set-up, is that really necessary? Or should I be shooting for around $900 for the rig (maybe $1100 with the monitor?). I kinda like the idea of an amd processor, but still would lean towards intel.

which piece? gpu? prices are only going up and what you get is going down, since maxwell the x80 non-ti is no longer even a cut-down version of the flagship chip but is instead its own wimpy chip, and with pascal midrange cards like the 1050 ti/1060 are no longer even top perf/$ (why should they be? AMD isn't competing) so if you want the 'most' for your money you need to get a 1070...

for what it's worth it's not going to get better any time soon, vega is a flop. By next gen the xx80 ti will probably be a smaller chip as they save the flagship chip exclusively for the titan XYZ.

If you're spending $200 on a monitor it's probably 1080p right?
