Basically I've never put together a gaming PC before, but I've always wanted to. The busy season at work just ended, so I'm about to have a decent amount of free time, and it feels like my laptop is about to crap out, so this seems like a great opportunity.

Budget: $1200 (but this is flexible. Like, if spending a couple hundred more would get me a huge upgrade, I'd go for it. Also, if there's very little difference between something that's $1000 and $1200, I'd do the $1000)
More Specific Use: I don't really have anything in mind. Player Unknown Battlegrounds I guess. Really just looking for something that will last awhile and easily run new games on decent settings
Purchase Time: Sometime next week
Will need an OS
No specific preferred components
Yes to sound and wireless I think (98%+ of the time I'll use an ethernet cord, but just in case)
Stock cooling
No on the monitor (will be using an HDMI cord to display on my TV), mouse and keyboard I have, but may upgrade later
78704 zip code

The idea would be to put something simple and useable together now, then upgrade stuff as time goes on. Case can be dull, no preferred brands. Thanks for any help I can get!

Using a tv is a bad plan. High input latency will be a problem.

Indeed you really feel the latency using a mouse.
Console based games are okay tho.

Pretty kewl there is some 40+ inch monitors on the market now. If we reach 50 inch monitors im changing from a tv. I do not have any tv channels so only streaming services. Htpc + 50inch monitor

Didn't realize there was a big difference, I'll probably get a monitor then.

You're gross. Getting an 8400 like some are recommending is pretty dumb. Any upgrade will have to be from the 8000 series because the chipset went EOL the day it came out.

Plus 1600 is cheaper and won't be as on fire as intels
Plus my builds enable decent 1440p matching monitors.

Let's see wug m8

AMD is still amazing for consume workstations. i use a ryzen 1700 in server and ryzen 1700 in editing build.
My gaming station will keep running maxed overclocked intel tho.

And ryzen doesn't suck at all for gaming. games optimized for ryzen yields just as high FPS. they are almost on pair IPC. intel still wins on core clock speed tho. But they also run extremely hot. Zen2 should hopefully be able to ryzen to higher clock speeds.

Bulldozer just gave AMD an incredible bad reputation.
Just be glad AMD finally pushed Intel for more cores.
