The Catalonian separatist movement is nearly a century old, and for the most part has been held in check by brutal dictators. But the modern Spanish government is also having none of it and is mobilizing thousands of police in an effort to block even holding the vote.

the development in spain should all teach us a lesson that we shouldnt take the continuity of nations for granted and make a policy that does not alienate certain regions from others

There was a referendum about this in November 2013. Anyone know what the outcome was?

It was non-binding. They're presenting this one as binding.

i can tell you what his stance is: catalonia has no constitutional right to hold that vote and that we therefore should ignore the will of the people.

could be, i would rather hear it from him though

as far as i am aware they is indeed nothing in the spanish constitution for them to have a vote
however there is the universal right of self-determination (that i personally firmly believe in)

there must be way to avoid this whole thing and find an acceptable solution
if not this will get ugly
