Sure if you show the full view of the nikon of the basket ball close up you may see it curve at the sides but again like I said the bigger the ball/globe the flatter the section you look at close up will appear
But if we look at the ratio, you are talking about a basket ball about 25cm is diameter compaired to a globe 12,700km in diameter if we asume GE
The point isnt that the horizon of the ball doesn't/can't show its curve close up uncropped or with a wider angle shot, but that a small section you view will appear flat

Notice the section highlighted in Green?
It appears to be a virtually flat surface when it's actually not. That's the point of the basket ball pic.
