instead of pulling your engine to replace a head gasket you could start by replacing the houses and thermo sensor and see if that fix's the issue, if it dosent then proceed to replace the waterpump and if that dosent fix it then replace the headgasget.

its cost effect to replace it in this mannor although they should have checked for leaks and if none of these fix it you have a cracked block.

Try and clear some plausible causes one by one.
Get the coolant checked for exhaust gaz.
check water pump for admissible flow.
Remove sparks and turn over and taste for that coolant vomitiv taste.
check exhaust fumes for whitish color.
Try and see what's up with the injectors and ignition timing.
check engine bay for any leaks.
etc.

edit / Any codes under the bad spark cyl 2, lile O2 sensor? Vaccum hoses all ok ? no whistling ?
