Ok so the first part is my fault for being an idiot.

My PC case has feet on the bottom to allow air flow, psu draws air in from beneath and there are air filters for dust/hair etc. Well I'm stupid and forgot to clean the filters so the psu started getting hot and shutting the computer off (all fans stayed on and lights flashed, everything else shut off). Happened 4-5 times before I realized it was a PSU problem so I replaced the PSU with another CX750M PSU BEFORE I was smart enough to clean the filters.

The second PSU worked great for about 2 weeks, by this point the second PSU smelled like burned plastic, so I stopped using the second psu and realized I needed to clean the filters which my stupid as finally did.

After this I put the first PSU back in and everything seemed fine, no weird smell, nothing shut off, all hardware was running 10-15 degrees C cooler than before I cleaned the air filter for the PSU. Everything worked great for 3 days and this morning the first PSU started to smell like burned plastic.

Cpu, motherboard and everything else that speccy monitors stays in the 20s-30 for Temps and gfx card is staying at 35-42. Just using Facebook and netflix. The LED temperature lights on the motherboard never go above 26.

So my question is, do you think this first PSU had heat damage from getting too hot and shutting down a few weeks ago and just did not start to actually melt and smell funny this morning? Or do you think there is something more than a dirty air filter causing these issues?

I do not want to get the PSU replaced or buy a new one if it is only going to last a few days lol.

Other hardware is:
MSI z170a gaming M5 motherboard
R9 390
I7-6700k
32GB g.skill trident 3200 mhz.

Yes I realize this is my fault for being stupid lol.

Hard to say without being there to test anything.
Though I would say you suspensions are justified. (the first question that is)

So play stupid like I don't know what happened and get the PSU replaced under warranty? Well I guess it is not really playing in this case haha

Thats entirely up to you.
tbh it may not even be heat related thats merely your assumption.
If that eases your guilt any.

No guilt here.

Yeah it is my assumption that it is heat, what else would it be though?

Things just break due to various factors.
Really don't want to type every possibility nor do I think I could,
however for example you have things like... Electro Migration.
