Nothing beats the real thing - running outside.

However, right now I am doing my cardio the elliptical exclusively except one night a week of indoor soccer. I just finished up coaching the offseason conditioning program I run for the local high school. I do everything with them along with the other countless amounts of sports and running I do. So my legs take a beating so usually August and September I give my legs some time off from the constant pounding by doing elliptical stuff. I despise swimming but that is also an awesome alternative.

your heart really doesn't give a sh*t where it's working but you do get additional benefits from taking it outside (sunlight and fresh air at the top of the list, but saving $ doesn't hurt)

doing cardio at the gym is just really convenient if you're already there / need the equipment for a warm-up (in which case it's not really cardio)

it's a personal choice. you could do a bit of both. i try to do as much cardio as possible outside in the summer, b/c in canada the options for doing it outside get constrained in late fall through late spring. i'd ski it out but i'm not near any many ski resorts.

Running is high impact, so just be aware of that. If you aren't used to it, your body will hurt in the ankles, shins, knees, back, shoulders, etc. I don't really advise running every day to start off, and make sure you run properly

do cardio on a bike of some sort as it can have a hyperptrophic effect on the different muscles in the legs.
