1st and reverse?
low or high rpm?
Grind or extra effort but no grind?
Buy an MGW + Lower box and a set of poly shifter bushings imo. If it's the trans you will know after the shifter goes in. When you get the rebuild done you will already have the best shifter on the market! Best case it's just shifter alignment but most people aren't that lucky. Get a turkey baster and exchange the fluid in the clutch reservoir. It's probably black and nasty. Bleed it until you get clear fluid (I use Motul RBF600 DOT4) and see if that helps. The stock hydraulics are adequate but just barely, and only with clean fluid. When set up right the triple cone synchros in the MN12 (Z06 gearings T56) are very, very smooth. They are significantly smoother than the $4500 ZR1 TR6060 I put in my C5Z. You can swap to Pennzoil Synchromesh and it will smooth out rough shifts, prolonging service life a bit. Shift effort will be increased when it's cold though.
Mine had the whole interior pulled out and FatMat installed on every surface, including the roof. It's pretty quiet for a 408/Centri car with 2" headers/ORX/GHL Bullets. Several companies sell sound deadening kits that only cover the torque tube tunnel area if you don't want to commit to that level of disassembly.
Lower that bitch about an inch! It's free! Post up before you buy a cam or any other mods. I can help you weed out the good, the bad, and the ugly.
I went ahead and did the Ranger method when cleaning out my fluid and went with the recommended cheap Prestone Dot 4 Synthetic. After that and the crazy amount of black crap was flushed out, I noticed very small black residual pieces floating around.
The next day, I come to look at the fluid to find it completely empty. (fml)
Checked the master cylinder and no signs of leakage or anything. (Factor out the cheap culprit)
And of course on to the painful culprit, I've come to believe I have a failing seal on my Slave cylinder which also has a possibility of the throwout bearing being in bad shape.
When there is fresh clean fluid in the system, the shifting is great (besides reverse when I have to use the forward gear to reverse method). Then the whole reservoir goes empty within a day which happened for the past week so it's something pretty bad but nothing that I can see on the outside. This is how I imagine there's a pool of fluid just sitting around in my bell housing and eventually my clutch might get affected.
Side note, I couldn't imagine lowering my car. My driveway is rocky and full of dips.
In the future though, I considered going with the TSP 228R cams and Comp 918 springs. (Haven't decided if I wanted to go NaK valves or Ti since GM decided not to give the NaK valves to the 01')
