Looking at picking up a cheapo bass boat to run down in the brackish waters by galveston.

Boat comes with a 96 Mercury 150hp 2 stroke (efi)

Anyone been around these or 2 stroke outboards in general? I've always had 4 stroke power on my boats so never been around them or know jack shit about them...

Not much info online other than they are the 350sbc of outboards for that time period.

Change the oil in the foot and run the piss out of it until it dies.

My grandfather has a 1990 model mercury 20 he used 2 days a week for 24 years before it finally let go. He replaced the ignition system once and rebuilt the lower unit once. It had the original powerhead on it.

Shit.. Take me 5 mins to pinch the oil line feeder and fry it. Almost a free High Five.

Good. This is kinda what I read and heard about these so it's a little piece of mind. The boat, Trailer, and Motor are only 5,000 bucks so I'm not to worried about it if it eats itself but I can't justify taking a 60k boat into salt water...

Really cant go wrong with a merc. The parts are usually readily available.
Boats.net has a pretty decent engine parts selector.
Can always get after market sierra parts for them fro like west marine or something. Marineenigne.com also a good source for parts.

Hate to say it but I don't have the heart to take this old girl down in the salt. Used it a handful of times now in fresh water for my weekly bass tournaments and i really like it!

Actually considering selling my skeeter and throwing the electronics on this thing. For another 5k I could add/fix anything it doesn't have that my skeeter does and still be 50k less than what I have into the skeeter...
