New Pickup!

Eternal Darkness - GameCube

I've wanted this game for a long time!
Was hoping to come across it thrifting..
But no luck!
I had to get it online for its going rate.

Not a cheap game though
I paid $85.
I think this is the most I've spent on one GameCube game?
Geez, retro games have gotten expensive.
I generally think paying north of $50 for any game is not worth it..
Welp, for this game I decided to make an exception.
Besides, I have made some good sales lately.
I don't feel too bad about breaking the bank for this one.

It is a survival horror game.
One that is exclusive to the GameCube.
I have been trying to avoid spoilers..
But I know it has some weird psychological gimmicks.
Things like, 'we just deleted all your save data' lol
I'm sure there are more.
But I want to give it a fresh look as much as I can.

I don't know much about the gameplay.
But I do know its considered among the best on the system.

Really looking forward to playing it! :)
I'm happy to add another heavy hitter to the collection.

Sounds like you found another game you like.
$85 seems high for a game.
I never owned a gamecube. Can't say i heard of this game.
Horror games are good tho.
Enjoy it

$85 feel high for a game to me too
Although, according to price charting, the ‘going rate’ is ~$100:

https://www.pricecharting.com/game/gamecube/eternal-darkness

GameCube prices have spiked like crazy in the last two years.
Total bummer because it is my favorite system to collect for.
I used to be way more into Dreamcast but switched to GameCube because it felt more affordable at the time..

Not so much these days. GameCube is now 20 years old and most of the games have not seen re-releases on modern platforms and there is no virtual console for it. Other than emulation there are few options but to buy old stock which is hard to come by for a console that was one of Nintendo’s biggest failures.

I still enjoy collecting for it though. But honestly, if prices continue to rise, I might get out priced and have to switch to emulating the games myself lol

Another new pickup!

Atelier Sophie - PS4

I've been having decent luck flipping PS3 and PS4 lately.
Don't really know much about the systems libraries..
But I have been trying to learn what games to look out for.
I know about some of the 'heavy hitters'.
But it takes to time to figure those games that are $20-$40 range.

Often, I start by just assuming JRPGs may be valuable lol
I would say it goes about 50/50.
Some successful RPGs are printed like crazy and are easy to find.
But a lot of them were low print run and have a rabid fanbase.
I get it. JRPGs are generally well made and fun!
Although tbh, I don't really like modern JRPGs.
I prefer the sprite art over the over-sexualized high res graphics..
Anime games also tend to have annoying voice actors.
I prefer some of the early generation when I can just read the text..

I digress..
I picked up Atelier Sophie at a pawn shop for $20.
Don't know anything about it other than $20 is a good deal.
I don't even have a PS4 lol
But the going rate seems to be $50+ online.
I think a sequel was released kind of recently.
Maybe that drove up the price a bit?
Wish I could say more about the game lol :)

Never heard of Atelier Sophie. My old roommate is really into japanese anime and so on.
These games can be really valuable, and reading your post i see you can flip it for 30$ profit? Not bad!

Can't say I am an anime fan, but there are definitely a few series/movies I enjoy!
I try to keep an open mind about all media content, but I have a hard time enjoying 'anime' games.
I love some of the early JRPGs, but more modern ones are a tough pill to swallow.
The sprite art is beautiful on those old games and the stories are crazy, but engrossing.
It's the voice acting on more modern JRPGs that I can't handle.
I played Tales of Symphonia a couple months ago..
.. it wasn't until I found out that I could turn off the voice acting that I started enjoying it lol
It was a great game! :)

But yeah, Altier Sophie was a nice pickup, all things considered!

I've had a real focus on GameCube collecting the last few years..
I love the system, and really enjoy the games I have picked up.
However, I'm getting exhausted with the system..

The games are just getting too expensive.
And now that I have ~200 games, I am scraping the barrel looking for things to play next.
Not that there aren't a lot of interesting games I don't have..
It's that most of the games I want to try are just too much money.

I think Eternal Darkness finally broke me.
Did I enjoy the game? Yes, it was good.
Was it $85 good?? I'm not too sure..
I kept having a lingering feeling that I wasn't enjoying it enough..
Paying these high prices is just changing the way I enjoy these games.

I've been reflecting on what I like about finding and playing old games..
I realize that I miss the early days of picking up something random.
I like finding a game I know nothing about for a couple bucks and checking it out.

The first system I did this for was Dreamcast.
When Dreamcast games started getting to pricey, I pivoted.
I started collecting GameCube as a cheap alternative.
It had a lot of appeal to me because of the Sega properties on the system.

Welp, maybe it's time to pivot again!
I did something crazy and picked up an original Xbox:

I think the Xbox is a natural switch for me..
The 6th generation is my favorite console generation.
It was the most powerful hardware of the era.
The system got a ton of Sega Support.
Titles like Shenmue 2, Jet Set Radiio, etc.
And importantly, it's cheap!

I have been no stranger to shitting on the Xbox library lol
And in general, I agree that it is on the weaker side.
But I think there are plenty of games that will be worth checking out!
It will also be fun to revisit some games I played as a kid too :)

This bundle also came with a couple games:

Jetset Radio Future/Sega GT - Xbox
Silent Scope Complete - Xbox

Halo: Combat Evolved - Xbox

Three great games to get me started.
Jet Grind Radio was killer on the Dreamcast.
Never played Jetset Future, but I hear it is great!
The controls on the DC game are clunky.
I imagine the sequel is a bit more smooth.

I have a lot of great memories of playing Silent Scope in the arcade.
Of course, I don't have the huge gun con (maybe someday lol)
But even with just a joystick, it has been a blast to play,
Just some good arcade-style fun.
Always wanted to pick up the Dreamcast version..
It's included here so now I don't need to :)

I've also been having a ton of fun revisiting Halo.
I"m currently playing the campaign on legendary.
I've done it once before, but with a friend in co-op.
It is a whole different beast trying to do it solo!

Got this lot for $60 on Facebook marketplace.
A pretty solid investment.
I'm looking forward to picking up some random games.
Can't believe I'm an Xbox owner, hah 😅
