New GameCube pickup online:

Haven't found a good deal on a GameCube lot in a while.
Online prices remain insane

However, I found a pretty good deal so I jumped on it!

Games on the left are complete.
Games on the right are missing the manual.

There are too many games to talk about them individually.
Some are doubles I already have.
Many are kind of shelf filler of stuff I didn't have (looking at you Charlie's Angels).
But there are definitely a couple gems in here!

Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2 is a great fighter.
I used to have this game as a kid on PS2.
I popped it in for a little while and was flooded with memories.
It is kind of a shame that it doesn't have the manual..
But it is not exactly a cheap title.
I'm just happy to get it at the price I did

This may be surprising to read...
But I'm stoked to have Muppets Party Cruise!!
Seems like something that would be garbage.
But it is actually a great party game!
In almost all respects, it is a Mario Party clone.
The graphics are worse, but some of the mini games are great!
The Mario Party GameCube games are pricey these days.
This is a great under-the-radar alternative.
Especially if you are a Henson/Muppets fan (like me lol).

I'm also happy to get Namco Museum 50th Anniversary.
I love these old arcade games.
It is nice to have a compilation like this.
As I get busier in life, my appreciation for simple good games has grown.
Great to kill some time when I have a free hour.

I did have an issue with the purchase though..
It was also supposed to Include Battalion Wars and RE Zero.
But when it arrived, it had the wrong games inside <_< :

What a shame.
I was really happy to get Battalion Wars.
It's not like the wrong discs here are particularly great either
I'll hang on to the case though.
Maybe I can find a deal on a disc only copy?

Two of the cases were also severely water damaged..

So much so that I think I will have to sell them as disc only.

Uhg. Seemed like a slam dunk pickup.
But I contacted the seller and they gave me a decent partial refund.

In total, this lot was $75.
Pretty good even with the issues above.
~$3.50 a game is hard to find for GC in any condition.
Plus it included a couple decent games and a little resale potential :)

I have not played Okami yet :(
I'm about to take my PhD qualifying exam in early October so I am swamped preparing.
I hear it is a long game (like 50+) so I am shelving it until after then.
Mostly been playing stuff that is a more 'bite-sized' experience.
I'm close to finishing Zack & Wiki and about 1/2 way through DK Returns.
I am looking forward to giving it a play though, looks great!

And thanks for the recommends!
I don't play many PS2 games (only have about 8 or so).
I also have traditionally not been a survival horror fan.
However, in the last couple years I have played some good ones:
RE remake for GameCube, RE4, Silent Hill, and D.
I really enjoyed all of those and have been wanting to play more!

I am familiar with Haunting Grounds.
Looks cool but it is expensive as hell lol
Don't know much about Fatal Frame.
Other than being vaguely familiar with the series names.
I'll have to check it out!

Congrats on taking the scholar's route far enough to even think about a PhD. After grad school I thought about it for roughly 11 seconds before I decided that I was gonna pass on that. I'll look through my collection to see if I can come up with any bite size sleepers. I know there are a few I'm not recalling right this second.

Haha thanks. It is both rewarding and stressful at times.
Luckily I worked for a few years before going back to school so I'm not burnt out too much.
But it will be nice wrap it up..
Whenever that happens lol

But yeah, I'm always open to some game recommendations!
Let me know if you think of anything :)

Recent Pickups:

Nintendo Power - December 2010

I am SO excited to pick this up lol
I have been looking for Nintendo Powers at Goodwill for years.
I check the magazine wrack every time and have never seen one.
Welp, one finally pops up! haha

Admittedly, I don't have a ton of nostalgia for NP.
I had a couple issues as a kid, but was never a subscriber.
But I definitely think they are pretty cool.
I don't hang on to many non-game retro items.
But I have always wanted to have a few periodicals.
I also have a few old 90's Wizard magazines.
It it is just fun to read some of the old articles about 'new' stuff lol

Too bad this isn't a more vintage issue.
But, it is at least neat that the cover is DKC returns after picking it up recently :)
It was $1 though so a no brainer pickup!

I had another nice pickup from Goodwill a few days ago:
Two Xbox 360 controllers.
Got them for $6
I took a picture of them, but I think I accidently deleted the photo :(
Oh well, just trust me lol

I haven't found a 360 controller in a while!
Seems like I was on a streak there for a while of finding them.
My local game store takes them in for $15
So it is always nice to pickup.

Anyway, I traded them in for this:

Zelda Skyward Sword - Wii

I guess I'm caught up in the new re-release hype lol
But really, I'm just trying to boost my Wii game library.
Especially while they are still affordable.

I am a big Zelda fan and have played almost all the major console releases.
However, I never played this one.
It just came out at a time when I wasn't too into gaming.
Plus, the consensus opinion at the time was that it was just mediocre.

However, I'm not turned off by that.
People also thought Windwaker was bad but it is one of my favorite games.
I don't know much about it, but I look forward to playing. :)

Couple new pickups!

Still super busy with school at the moment..
But I managed to squeeze in a thrift run this afternoon.
I think this is the first time I've been out thrifting in weeks!
Glad I did though, because I found a couple good things:

Spider-Man (Greatest Hits) - Playstation 1

This is the second time I've found this game at Goodwill lol
But that was a couple years ago!
I'm surprised to see this game has gone up quite a bit since then.
Not a crazy amount or anything, but it is now a ~$25 game :o

To be honest, I don't really understand why.
I have this game on Dreamcast (which is supposed to be the best version).
I think it's just... okay.

I am also not that into the Marvel Universe thing.
So maybe it's just not the type of game for me?
Either way, happy to pick it up for $2 so I can flip it!

It is kind of scratched to shit though <_<
I tested it and it works fine..but I still may need to get it resurfaced.
I don't feel great about letting someone pay the going rate for it in such poor condition.

Skydiving Extreme - Playstation 1

This was a total blind buy.
I check out the stack of junk PS1 games everytime I'm at Half Priced Books.
Normally it is just sports games and Mary Kate and Ashley things.
But this really caught my eye!

It just seemed like a such a weird game idea.
Also, it is published by Natsume (who does the Harvest Moon games).
For $1, I figured it was worth a try.

I'm happy to say, I actually kind of like it!
It is sort of a weird take on DDR.
Kind of hard to describe, but fun!

You are a skydiving crew that is 'battling' another team.
Basically, you have to hit button combinations.
The faster you hit them, the slower your descent it is..
If you fall slower than the other team, you win!
When you hit the combos right, you also do 'rad' formations with your team lol

I popped it in to check it out and actually had a hard time putting it down.
It is simple, challenging, but really pretty fun!

These are the type of pickups I love.
Knowing nothing about a game and being surprised it's quality.
Don't get me wrong, it's not amazing or anything lol
But much better than I anticipated it to be :)

Grabbed a couple new things last week:

Street Hoops - GameCube

Found this at a Flea Market for $3.
It's only like a $10 game online.
Not a crazy score or anything..
But I didn't have it so had to scoop it up!
Especially since it is complete and in nice shape.

Is it Activision's response to the success to EA's NBA street?
I don't know which series came out first lol

People tend to scoff at retro sports games.
But I actually like them quite a bit :)
Especially 'arcade' sports titles like NBA jam, NFL blitz, etc.
Those are some of the games I play the most!

I don't know anything about this game.
But I look forward to checking it out!

Star Wars Episode I Phantom Menace - Playstation 1 (Missing Manual)

Kind of a random pickup.
I am not crazy about Star Wars (especially the prequal trilogy)
And I'm not a big PS1 collector

But remember enjoying a PS1 Star Wars game as a kid.
It has always been in the back of my mind but could never remember which one it was.
This was only $1 at Half Priced Books.
I picked it up to see if this is the long lost game from my childhood.

Welp, it is!
However it's not as much fun as I remember :(
It looks bad, the voice acting is bad, the controls are stiff, and it is too hard.
I have too many good games in my backlog to ever revisit it.
It was fun to play for a little bit and recapture some memories.
But I'll probably trade it in to my local game store for a few pennies lol

Dead or Alive Ultimate - Xbox

Original Xbox is so weird.
It was the most powerful console of the generation.
It had a great library of games.
But no one seems to want to collect for it lol
Even with retro game prices spiking after Covid..
There are very few Xbox games that have any value.

This bundle is sadly no different.
I'm surprised to see a collectors bundle like this only sells for ~$15.
I mean, Dead of Alive is a great fighting series!
Not a huge fan of the genre, but I played a lot of DoA back in the day.

Picked this up for $4..
I just couldn't help myself.
I don't even have a way to play it.
But the packaging is so nice and it was complete!
I think it may be a little hard to resell, but I couldn't resist lol

I have a decent resale pile, but I'm too busy to sell things atm.
In late October, I'll finally get around to recouping some money lol

It was my birthday in late September.
My sweet girlfriend got me a couple games on my wishlist <3

The thrifting scene has been tough.
I am grateful for what I have been able to find.
But it seems like good stuff is getting scarcer.
Many games I want are getting more and more expensive too

But it makes getting these games as gift even sweeter.
These are titles I have been wanted for a while, but couldn't justify the price:

Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door - GameCube

I don't have a ton of experience with this series.
The only one I have played is Super Mario RPG.
People love this series, and many suggest it peaked with this entry.

I have only played about ~3 hours of it so far.
But I can see why it is such a loved game.
It is really fun and a refreshing take on the RPG genre.

It is definitely weird to play a turn based RPG in the Mario universe.
But this game seamlessly integrates the classic Mario mechanics into the genre.
It is perhaps a little too simple.
But it has been very fun so far to have a more casual RPG experience.
Like I said, I'm only 3 hours in, so maybe the difficulty will ramp later on.

The story, while not too novel, is pretty engrossing.
But what I like the most about it is its graphical style and charm.
I am really impressed by how good it looks!

I have a couple RPGs in my backlog right now..
but this game jumped to the front lol
Unfortunately, I'm still in the throws of my graduate school exams.
I have only squeezed in a couple hours of play in the last ~3 weeks.
But soon, I will (finally) be able to really jump in!
Looking forward to it :)

Um Jammer Lammy - Playstation 1

This is a game I have wanted for sooo long!

It is a rhythm game in the Parrapa the Rappa universe.
It's not crazy expensive... but not cheap.
It's incredibly short and more of a 'weird' experience than a 'good game'.
I could never justify the price.
But by all accounts, it has blown me away!

I think this game is hilarious.
The cover looks so innocent and bland.
But this game is like a crazy LSD trip lol

You are Lammy, the guitar player of the up and coming band Milk Can.
Lammy is trying to get to her bands gig when all kinds of shenanigans start to happen.
I'm not sure I can even explain it in a way that makes sense lol
You put out a building fire with some jazzy guitar play.
You are falsely accused of being pregnant and have to play rockabilliy to put some babies to sleep.
It just gets weirder and weirder lol

Unfortunately, the rhythm aspect of it is kind of whack.
It just doesn't feel like correct button presses are on time with the beat.
Maybe it is because I use a wireless controller and I'm playing it on PS3?
But it took me a few tries to get the timing down.
Don't think you can jump into this game just because you play guitar hero lol

However, the biggest flaw is probably that it is incredibly short
Personally, I actually don't mind that.
It can just be hard to pay a premium price for a short game.
But It's nice for a game to not overstay its welcome.
It also affords some replay-ability and multiplayer fun!

Super happy to have these games!
Happy birthday to me :)
