New Pickup:

Star Ocean: The Second Story (PS1)

Got it online for $30

A little bit of an unusual pickup for me.
If you have read through this thread you would know that I rarely seek out PS1 games.
Symphony of the Night is the only one that comes to mind that I paid roughly the going rate.

It's not that I don't like PS1 games.
In fact, I think the PS1 may have the strongest overall library of any retro console.
It's just that most of the games are long and require a serious time investment.
Plus, some of the more obscure games I'm interested in can be pretty pricey.

I've been interested in Star Ocean for a while.
Back in college, I had a friend that swore by this game as the best RPG ever made.
I wasn't really into retro stuff back then but the game always stuck in my mind.
Since I have been actively buying retro games, I've kept my eye out for it.
It was kind of an impulse buy at $30.
But I'm happy to have picked it up!

I got it a week ago and I am already about halfway through the game.
I really enjoy it, but it is much different than I expected.
It kind of sells itself as a Sci-fi RPG but it is really more standard RPG fare.
I like the real time combat, and I am actually pretty invested in the story so far.
It has kind of an Elemental Gimmick Gear vibe that I really like.
Can't wait to play more of it :)

GameStop had an online sale the other week of buy 5 games under 19.99 for 50% off
Decided to try my luck and ordered a few things.

I guess GameStop has made an effort to start selling retro games?
I haven't been in a GameStop in probably ten years, but I am pretty sure they are only available online.

Most people have had a bad experience with it though.
For whatever reason, they don't list whether games are complete or disc only.
Kind of shitty to pay a premium price for a game and not know the condition.
But online prices have been crazy the last couple months, so for 50% off I decided to roll the dice.

Here is what I picked up:

Viewtiful Joe 2 (GameCube)
Mario Power Tennis (GameCube)
Prince of Persia The Two Thrones (GameCube)

Only Viewtiful Joe came with the cover art.
No manual and in a generic DVD case -_-

I tried ordering "common" GameCube games with the hopes that they would have a better chance of being complete.
Honestly, Viewtiful Joe was the one I thought would definitely be disc only

Oh well, I will sell the loose games and maybe recoup my money?

The Final Fantasy Legend (GameBoy)
Sword of Mana (GBA)

Decided to get a couple Gameboy games since I don't mind if they are loose.
Happy to see they are in good shape!

Sword of Mana is a game I have been interested in for a while.
It's actually a remake of Final Fantasy Adventure for Gameboy but didn't review too well..
I read about it and it sounds like most of the critiques are that it was just a graphical update and did not improve on the limited combat of the original.
I think it looks great though!

I haven't played many of the Mana games, but I really like their combat system.
Secret of Mana is one of the few SNES RPGs I've played and I ate it up.
I think I will like Sword of Mana as it seems similar in play style :)

The Final Fantasy Legend is a very simple turn based RPG.
It was an early release on the platform (I think 1989?) and one of the first RPGs on a handheld.
Graphically, it looks a lot like the original Pokemon games.
I am not expecting much out of it.. mostly just curious to see how creative they could be with original Gameboy hardware.
I think it may be the oldest game in my collection now!

Got these 5 games for $36.

Even without getting those GameCube games with the case, overall I think it was a good deal :)

First sale in a long time!

Sold my disc only and double GameCube games:
Pikmin 2
Super Monkey Ball 2
Harry Potter Quidditch
Mario Power Tennis
Prince of Persia two thrones

Got $85 for the lot.

Probably could’ve squeezed out a little more selling individually but it’s all good! :)

A couple new pickups!

Viewtiful Joe - GameCube

Finally I find this game at a decent price!

Got it for $25 dollars online.
Not a great deal, but most complete copies go in the $30-$40

Normally I take the stickers off the case and clean them up..
But I think it is hilarious that this sold at a retail store for $2.99 lol
I'm definitely going to leave this on as I expect this game to go up in value.

This is a game series I have long been interested in.
Even back in the GameCube days, I was always curious about it but never enough to pickup a copy.
Well, ~15 years later and I finally have it :)

I don't normally like beat-em-ups but this game has so much personality that it always sticks out in my mind.
I really love the cell-shaded art style too.
This game really defines the GameCube era to me.

Tube Slider (disc only) - GameCube

So it's come to this..

Collecting GameCube has been really weird lately.
Since I have started really searching out for the stuff, I have seen some games really take off in value.
City Racer, for instance, a game I picked up at goodwill a year ago (post # 153), is now a game that goes for >$100.
It's just insane.

At the time, I almost passed on it because its average sale price was ~$8.
Glad I didn't..
But how does it jump up in price so rapidly? I don't get it.
Honestly, I'm a little frustrated about it.
Games on the platform are rising so rapidly, I'm worried I will get priced out of collecting for it.

Anyway, Tube Slider is a game kind of like City Racer.
Just a couple months ago, it was a ~$10-$20.
Now a complete copy goes for $60-$80!

I saw this at my local game store when I went in to get a disc resurfaced.
Even though it was disc only, they were only asking $11.
I don't think the game stores can even keep up with how fast online prices are rising

Tube Slider is not bad.
It's a pretty cool futuristic racing game.
Almost reminds me of a cheap Fzero Gx knockoff.
Is it worth $80? Not at all lol.

I'm gonna sell it disc only to recoup some money.
I think GameCube deals online are fading.
Guess I'll just have to keep searching thrift stores once things return to normal.

Money spent: $2208

**I messed up the math last when I switched over to the new page.
This is the correct total now!

New pickups this week!

Things in my state are starting to slowly re-open.
But I haven't really been out much hunting for games.

I was working from home late last week when my power went out for over 4 hours.
I was so bored that I decided to go out and see what was open.

I stopped by a local antique mall that I have scored some good stuff at before.
Didn't get anything too crazy this time, but here is what I got:

Legend of Zelda Strategy Guide Bundle

Pretty neat find!
I don't really collect gaming 'paraphernalia".
I am more interested in actual games themselves.
But seeing these strategy guides really took me back.

I had an Ocarina of Time strategy guide that I used to beat the game back in the 90s lol
It is funny to think of a time where people didn't just look up guides online.

These are not in the best shape.
Pages are crinkled, the spine glue is damaged, and the tear-out extras are gone.
But I kind of enjoy it more knowing that these were actually used and cherished by someone. :)

For $3 each, it is a decent deal.
If they weren't in such bad shape it would be a steal.
But Zelda stuff is very sought after, even in rough shape.

I'm gonna sell these.. who knows what I will get.

Heroes of Might and Magic Platinum Edition (PC)

I'm not much of a PC gamer, but I was so excited to find this!

Heroes of Might and Magic was my jam back in the day.
I played II and III for hundreds of ours as a kid lol
I even have the GameBoy Color games (which are still fun tbh)
This is a collection of the first 6 games.

I got this for $1
It was unopened and it pretty nice condition!

The box and packaging are kind of disappointing though
PC games are often packed with cool extras or full color manuals.
This has nothing but a CD sleeve lol

Partly why I was excited to get this is I have an excuse to bust an old Windows XP computer I got recently.
My office was clearing out old computers and I snagged one for free just for a scenario like this.

It is a real trip to play HoMM II on windows XP again lol :)

Stopped by my local game store and found a few GameCube games in the bargain bin:

Aggressive Inline (GameCube)

I've come across this game for cheap a few times but finally decided to pick it up.
I have been in the mood for an action sports game.
Really I haven't played many of them other than the THPS series.

I recently saw a review about this game online and it looked intriguing.
I think it does a lot of things right for a game of this genre.
The only drawback is that inline skating just doesn't have the same appeal as skateboarding.
But that's fine, I'm looking forward to checking it out!

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (GameCube)

Prince of Persia is such a popular series but I have never played a single one of them!
From what I have read, this is the best place to start.

It is kind of in rough shape and sadly without the manual.
But I was happy to pick it up.
I will basically buy any GameCube game for a couple bucks..
But this is one of those few exceptions on the GameCube where a fun and premium title doesn't break the bank.
Happy to finally get a chance to play it :)

WW Crush Hour (GameCube)

Yeah... I don't give a shit about wrestling.
And I don't like wrestling games.

But a cheap complete GameCube game?
Gotta buy it..even if that cover art is really sun-faded.

Got these 3 games for $15.

Another local gamestore pickup:

Top Angler - GameCube

A 'rare' GameCube game.
I'm not actually sure if it is hard to find, but it is currently selling online for ~$100.
I got it for ~$17.
Even without the manual, it was a pretty good deal.

Still, this is more than I would like to pay for a game like this lol
But ya know, if I am going to collect a full GameCube set, this is what it will be like.
There are some notable expensive crappy games out there..
NCAA 2K3, Disney Sports Basketball, etc.
I'm sure I will discover more as the library grows.

I haven't played it yet, so maybe it is actually not bad?
I kind of enjoy a fishing game from time to time.
Just not at a premium price.

Oh well, I am happy to have it now rather than buy later for much more!

Simpson's Hit and Run - GameCube (Disc Only)

This is another game that has spiked in price recently.
Kind of sad it is disc only, I don't have this game.
I am a really big Simpson's fan too. I would love to have it complete someday.

I just bought it to resell though.
Even if it is disc only, they were selling it way cheaper than what it has been going for recently.

I'm hoping to make my money back on this lot by just selling this one.

Spent $35 for these 2 games

Money Spent: $2268
Total Sales: $2168
Profit: -$100

I have a few things I need to list for sale. Just been lazy.
Hopefully I'll start getting some money soon lol
