wait for a sale and get it with the two kit lenses
youll never need another camera.

Any good camera shops to look around?

Also, newb question but what exactly is DSLR and what is it good for?

Does point and shoot have any benefits?

bestbuy
bestbuy has the best sales when stuff goes on sale

Dslr is basically the cameras where every setting can be changed manually.
Point and shoot are just dumbed down easy cameras to use without much manual capabilities. I suggest just learning on something like the a6000 because it is simple enough to use in Auto mode that its basically a point and shoot (much like any other DSLR) but with better quality output.

also, Keh.com is a great website to buy from used

EX or ex+ is basically brand new in box but lower prices.

I buy all my gear from them

This.

other than a Nikon or Canon, you're not going to get a camera that is as well supported as the sony's. especially now that sigma and tamron are making their lenses for the sony mount.

the alpha's are great camera's and they're much more portable than them.

you being in Aus is the trick. not sure where to get them. honestly, seek out a good camera store that does want to help you. they shouldn't be more expensive than a big box store, and they might price match sales for you. they kind of need to in order to maintain business.

the nice thing about a good camera store is they will treat you well, answer your questions, and take care of you. nothing against big box stores, but you will get better info at a good camera shop. at a big box store you might get lucky and get the 1 or 2 people that really do know the ins and outs of the devices, but not always.

Best Buy is an example of one. Big stores. Not the specialized smaller ones.
