The newest one. Thoughts?

I know I juts started but it'd be cool to add a 3rd lens

I've heard it's a great starter pickup even though it's only a 220 dollar lens.

I could end up getting a brand new one from best buy for 130 so I'm really itching to buy it lol

If you can pick up a used 50mm 1.8g for like 100-130 you should get it. Not worth new at 220 unless theres no other place to get them for that price.

Just to clarify: There are two 50mm 1.8G lenses. Both are optically and functionally the same. There is one with some silver on it... it costs more... it was made to go with the Nikon DF camera as a special edition sort of thing. Also, the older 50mm 1.8D is not very good.

Some people report the 50mm 1.8G is so-so. My experience is that it is indistinguishable from my 85mm 1.8G in terms of optical quality ($450-$500 lens). I am unlikely to ever sell my 50mm 1.8G.

I suggest you test the lens out thoroughly. Check focus accuracy and sharpness meticulously. I had a bad experience with Best Buy (bought a 35mm 1.8G that misfocused), and I just assume if they get a lens return they repackage it.

nope, they mark them as open box items. if it was bad out of the box, came that way from factory. and if the lens was a defective return, it goes back to the vendor. only reason it would go open box is because the person returning it didn't tell them it was defective.

"Only" 220 for a 50mm 1.8?

I am so glad I shoot Canon, lol.

????

Canon's $100 plastic 50mm isn't on the same level as the 50mm 1.8G.

The Canon 50mm 1.8 II renders piss-poor from f1.8 to f2.2. At DXOMark, it red-zones at f1.8, yellow-zones between f2.0 and f2.2. That means it's pulling ~3 megapixels of equivalent sharpness, up to 5 megapixels, and then it gets into the ~20 megapixels equivalent sharpness at f2.8. Nikon's 50mm 1.8G, on the other hand, comes down to about 8 megapixels of equivalent sharpness at f1.8, and at f2.0 it gets near peak already. You can also confirm this by checking out the-digital-picture's image comparison.

On a crop body, the difference in value is even more pronounced. The 50mm 1.8 II Canon lens performs poorly until about f3.2. Its sharpness peaks out at f4 at an okay but still only 10 equivalent megapixels level. The Canon lens drops in sharpness after f5.6. The 50mm 1.8G peaks out at about f2.5 at a 14 equivalent megapixels level, and doesn't start dropping in sharpness until about f7.1.

Sorry, but a crap 50mm 1.8 is a crap 50mm 1.8. I have one, everyone has one, the mom down the street that just got a dslr for christmas has one. Can't even start taking 50's seriously until it's at least 1.4. It's a starter lens, I would never pay that much for one.

It having a plastic casing goes along with it being starter..no one expects to use that lens forever :/ It's not an investment.

The 50mm 1.8G is an excellent lens... the 50mm 1.4G is optically approximately equal if not slightly worse than the 50mm 1.8G, with the exception that the 50mm 1.4G can shoot at f1.4. The 50mm 1.8G focuses faster than the 50mm 1.4G as well.

The next step up over the 50mm 1.8G is not the 1.4 at $400. It would be the 58mm 1.8G at close to $2000, or the 50mm 1.4 Art at around $900.

The 50mm 1.8G is an excellent lens and at $200 it is still an excellent lens.
