I agree with starting mage out with 40 base vit before putting all points into int. I tried all int, 5/5 , 10 to vit, and 15 vit. I think 15 works best for me so far. Also, once you get to 60+ lvl you will be regening life more than mana. Also, there's a reason why Ice is prefer over their adversaries. The constant damage will let you judge how much mana you still have before continuing on with your battle. I would recommend using lpk items and a tier III staff or dagger with good EE for level 1-10. You should be able to do 1-10 without regen. Someone should add their average exp per full regen at each 10-15 levels.
At 45+ I'm lucky to get 150 k exp per full regen but then again most people don't full regen either. Its a good scale though to know how well your mage match up to other mages.

I often wanted to try playing Mage but never found the best way to build one, this will be my alt char if I ever get back to 71!

Hehe. I kinda pathed my success by this guide (as I had to restart earlier) and I've made it to level 20 by following this guide. Did 1-14 or so without having to regen, and did 14-20 having to regen only once per level.

I'll post my gear if anyone's interested. It's a little bit better than the numbers I provided in the guide, but I have paid more FG than I should to acquire it. I should have bought lesser things and saved more FG for the high levels.

Yes , especially as difficult and slow going as Level 60 + is now , I think you will find a change in priority for the lower Level Items .

i guess i experimented myself too ... i did a test of not putting any on vita points ... just pure damage ... but i do have max life on my gear ... and thats really all i needed

I just can't do pure INT. I don't have it in me to try, I get so unbelievably tired of dying in close battles up top, I'm doing this thing now where I'll put all my given points into Vitality. The base 10 + the ones I get for failing the MQs.
