Backlund’s only been our 2C for 2-3 years, and he has a 60% defensive zone start this year, so 50 points, without any PP time, sounds good to me.
As far as Coots, ya it’s a good year, but you better hope this year isn’t just an outlier to his usual numbers. Kinda like Giroux’s 93 points once upon a time.....
giroux has been battling through injuries this is the first season hes fully healthy in a couple of seasons
hes a small guy he gets beat up at center vs the bigger guys thats one reason they switched him back to wing and put couts the big bodied guy in the middle
couts is using his body more then ever too hes playing like he should have been our #1 center long ago i dont think this season is a one off hes consistently played great him giroux and konecny have built up nice chemistry too
giroux was actually a RW when he came into the nhl but they made him center and now thats seemingly a mistake looking back he was always getting hurt and hes better on wing with the open ice
another thing about defenzone starts and what not ... couts might not have the highest defensive stat for that becasue we also have giroux who has been one of the best faceoff guys in the nhl for a couple of seasons
couts is also +21 on a team thats +3 in goal differential
the only person close in points/goals thats higher is bergeron +24 on the bruins which are +52 goal differential and next best on philly is giroux at +12
search +- and its all bruins vgk dallas tbl ect ect teams that are like +20 or more in goal differential couts is like the only player in that mix not on a team thats got a high positive goal differential
couts also only has 11/58 pts from the pp backlund has 10/34 so i wouldnt say pp time is a big factor unlike previous years where backlund got more pp toi then couts where and gets 1/3 his points
