Found some morels out in the yard, which I harvested, fried, and then ate. Also cooked one with a steak a couple days later.

There was like one or two of them last year, which I didn't pick. Now there's like a dozen. Plus they spread from beneath the pear tree to the apple tree (apple tree is dying unfortunately). I didn't pick all of them, since I want the colony to continue to spore.

The dying apple tree has the nutrients they need, I find them around dead and dying apple trees all the time. I also find them around elm trees with the bark falling off. A couple friends found a few so far this year, but I haven't found any yet. It's supposed to warm up next week and I think they will be out in full force. I usually watch for lilac bushes to flower, seems to be about the same timing as mushrooms popping here. Glad you found some man, thats cool.

Been out and about in the woods, nothing good to report, except lots of sign of turkey and deer.

Growing up we used to do survival weekends kayak down river 10 miles to a farm with nothing but a knife 15' fishing line and 1 hook and a canteen of water for the yak trip down and to refill once purified.

We'd start a fire, make our own shelters my fave is a lean-to its simple and quick and then hunt/fish/trap i havent done it in about 12 years bc of kids but my oldest is to the age now where we've started planning it.

Haha, I see what you did there... but yes, definitely getting the hang of it :P

I never considered it would help me to see more animals. I'm typically a 3-season camper, but I'll be dabbling with some winter hikes this year. Would you clear the snow from your surroundings as well? Either push it aside or stomp it down?

Stomp or clear the snow for a tent? If so hell no, your tent should be waterproof, if not get a new one or waterproof it. Always use a tarp anyways imo to lay. The snow actually works as insulation and will help keep you warmer.

We were talking about the camp area itself if he had no shovel. I told him to clear the snow and leaves out to bare ground, and then he wouldn't make so much noise when moving about his camp and would see more animals that way.

That's awesome man. My dad was a Vietnam vet and when I was born got me into survival skills and prepping, using weapons, etc. I'm nowhere as extreme as he is, but i love the wilderness and using it to my benefit.
