I live in michigan, plenty of rabbits and fished through the ice on the lake I camped near. I also ate a few things that were not particularly appetizing, like grubs from under pine bark, and some smaller birds and rodents. A few of my friends and a girl I was hanging out would bring me stuff too when they could that they could sneak out.
Edit, the worst art was keeping warm, It was a lot of work building 2 fire rings and moving my tent over the coals i covered with sand and then pack snow around it and start another fire for the next day. I had to keep the dirt close to the ring or it would freeze, that was the worst of it.
