I think it's pretty clear Benning was determined to get rid of Gaudette today.
Not sure if the team is upset with him, or he requested it because of everything that happened, or what, but it seems to abrupt for something not too smell. Especially because the word was the Canucks wouldn't be trading players after the entire ordeal they went through.
Yeah it's kinda sus, his wife deactivated all social media or something and gaudette was quick to take off all canucks related stuff on his shit. All speculation and rumors at this point, but I can see why the team may have been upset with him if he was being irresponsible and gave covid to the team. Especially with Hamonic's kid situation, and bo having to live in his basement by himself to isolate from his kid and wife during his bday etc.
Anyway as for the trade, it was clear gaudette wasn't good enough to be a 3c or 4c in the NHL, at least for the Canucks. He couldn't even outplay sutter or beagle. He only proved that he could score pts in an extremely sheltered deployment, but so did virtanen lul. Otherwise he isn't as useful to the team since he can't pk, hit, play defense etc. If hall fetched only a 2nd, gaudette would've fetched 4-6th even if he's a rfa. The chances of those picks turning into a depth NHLer or anything is already slim, and it would take at least few yrs. So I guess Benning's scout felt that chances of highmore turning into a motte is higher than the the late pick turning into something useful.
