There are four major ways to trade neopoints or items on neopets. They include the shop, trading post, auction, or through gifting.
This guide will help those of you who do not know how to trade on neopets and hopefully point you in the right direction.

I. Shop
II. Trading Post
III. Auctions
IV. Gifting
V. Trading Pets
VI. FAQS

I. Shop

The first method is the shop method. Generally only neopoints are traded by this method (maximum of 99,999 nps per transaction). You first need to have a shop ( http://www.neopets.com/market.phtml?type=your ), once you have that set up you can trade using the shop method.

A ) Selling Neopoints - Have the buyer put up a junk item through the shop. Once that is done, simply go to the the buyer's shop and buy the junk item and now you've just sold nps.
B ) Buying Neopoints - Go into your inventory ( http://www.neopets.com/objects.phtml?type=inventory ), click on a junk item, and select "Put into your shop." Now go into your shop, set the price of the item, and have the person selling neopoints but the item.
  • Small Transactions (max of 99,999 nps)
  • Tedious if trading large amounts of nps
  • Risky selling items
II. Trading Post

The second method to trading is the trading post. Both items and nps can be traded here, with a maximum of 800,000 nps per transaction. First we will discuss item transactions, then we will discuss nps transactions.

A ) Selling Items - Put up the item(s) you're trading on the trading post ( http://www.neopets.com/island/tradingpost.phtml ) by clicking create a new trade. Once you have the items on the trading post, have the buyer offer a junk item (make sure it's the correct user). Once the offer comes in, accept it and you've sold items to the user.
B ) Buying Items - This works the same way, but in reverse order. Have the seller of the items create a trade on the trading post, then you offer up a junk item on that trade, and once the seller accepts, you will have possession of the item(s) you were buying.
C ) Selling Neopoints - Have the buyer put up a junk item on the trading post and then you offer up neopoints (up to 800,000) and an item to trade. If the trade is confirmed, you just sold that amount of neopoints to the user.
D ) Buying Neopoints - This again works the same way in reverse. You have to throw up a junk item on the trading post, have the seller (of nps) offer the nps, and once you accept, you should have the nps in your possession.
  • Sizable transactions (max of 800,000 nps)
  • Ability to trade multiple items
III. Auctions

The third method is the auction. This works for both nps as well as items, but the best part is there are no restrictions to how many nps you can trade (be reasonable though). The first downside is the 1h wait you have before the auction closes. The second downside is that the auction is open to everyone. Before throwing any item up for auction, make sure you have the buyer of the item added as a neofriend ( http://www.neopets.com/neofriends.phtml ) and set the auction to neofriends only.

A ) Selling Items - Go into your inventory ( http://www.neopets.com/objects.phtml?type=inventory ), select the item you're selling and choose "Put up for auction!" Set the nps amount to 1 and the increment to 1 and make sure you have it set for neofriends only (so other random people don't snipe the item). Have the buyer offer on the item and after an hour, the auction should close and you will have sold an item to the user.
B ) Buying Items - The same applies, but have the seller of the item send you a link to the auction, just offer on it and wait for the auction to end.
C ) Selling Neopoints - Have the buyer of the neopoints put up a junk item for auction through the inventory ( http://www.neopets.com/objects.phtml?type=inventory ) and set the appropriate nps amount. Keep in mind the amount is the start price + minimum increment, so if the start = 400k and the increment is 100k, you're actually trading 500k. Once that's done, have the seller offer up on the auction and wait until the hour is up to have sold the nps.
D ) Buying Neopoints - Put up a junk item and choose the appropriate amount you're trading. Keep in mind the amount is the start price + minimum increment, so if the start = 400k and the increment is 100k, you're actually trading 500k. Have the seller offer up on the auction and you should have it done after an hour.
  • No limit on transaction size
  • Ability to trade items
  • Requires you to become neofriends with the other trader
IV. Gifting

Gifting only works for items and can be done through your inventory ( http://www.neopets.com/objects.phtml?type=inventory ).

A ) Selling Items - Select the item, choose "Give to NeoFriend" and then type in the user's neopets account name.
B ) Buying Items - If the seller has done the above, you should receive a notification of an item being received. Click on the link provided or this link ( http://www.neopets.com/items/transfer_list.phtml ) to accept the item(s).
  • Convenient way of trading items
  • Regarded as the safest way to trade
  • Unable to trade neopoints
V. Trading Pets

A ) Selling Pets - Go to the Neopian Pound ( http://www.neopets.com/pound/index.phtml ), click on transfer, then choose which pet to transfer and to whom to transfer to (1,000 np fee). Once the buyer accepts the pet, the trade has been completed.
B ) Buying Pets - Once the seller has transferred the pet, you should receive a notification from neopets telling you that someone is transferring a pet to you. Click the link and accept the pet. You will have to pay a fee depending on the stats of the pet (More stats, higher fee).

VI. FAQS

1) Q: Which is the safest way to trade items/neopoints?
A: I would say gifting is the safest way to trade items. As far as neopoints goes, everyone has their own opinions, I've done all three before multiple times and have not been caught.

2) Q: How do I prevent scams or take the appropriate screenshots for a trade?
A: Always use a mediator for trades. If you want to do it without the help of a mediator, I will be creating a guide to helping you take the appropriate screenshots to getting the scammer locked.
