I thought Martinez might of hit free agency. Maybe he was afraid of how the last 2 offseasons went for some players. Being only a DH makes it so only 1/2 the teams are in the market for him.

JD Martinez has been the 2nd best bat in MLB since 2015. Agree or disagree? Pretty easy answer...

I'll take that ANY DAY over giving ANY player a 10+ year/30mil+ deal like Mookie will get/want.

I've already given some reasons why....
5'9 170....Huge negative. His defense will take a major hit once he loses some speed in 3-4 years. No way he'll cover the ground he does to make plays.
He is a pure pull hitter with 0 opposite-field power. His approach at the plate, along with his success comes mainly from his bat speed. I don't want them to pay a pure pull hitter that's going to lose his bat speed as he ages....
He's a leadoff hitter, really...
His postseason numbers are shit. This isn't a shocker though...pure pull hitting against playoff level opponents is a bad formula for success...

He had an amazing 2016 with Ortiz protecting him
Shit 2017 once he was the guy
MVP 2018 with JD protecting him
Very solid 2019

Stop it lol, baseball is such an individual sport and to be attributing JD and Ortiz as protecting him is just dumb.

Mookie Betts isn't going to fall off a cliff in 3-4 years batting wise or fielding... and if you want to talk about fielding, JD is the biggest liability out there. And we have to deal with the opt-out drama again next year, if he puts together another good season you best bet he's going to leave or demand a bigger/longer contract, especially because the contract drops by $4M next year. Listen I like JD and think he's been a big piece to the team but if you have to lose one of JD/Mookie I'm getting rid of JD everyday. Mookie has the edge in contact/on-base percentage overall... JD is going to get you more doubles and home runs... but Mookie is a far superior base runner and an elite fielder whereas JD can't field at all. The only thing JD has on him is power and I'll give you postseason success, but the post-season doesn't matter if you don't put in the regular season work.

That being said they're fucked because of the following:
Rusney Castillo ($13,500,000 2020)... hasn't been in the MLB since 2016
Dustin Pedroia ($13,125,000 2020, $12,125,000 2021)... probably doesn't play again.
Pablo Sandoval ($5,000,000 2020)... not on the roster.

$31,625,000 in just pure dead money basically.

Then consider the following contracts:
Chris Sale ($30,000,000 2020, $30,000,000 2021, $30,000,000 2022, $27,500,000 2023, $27,500,000 2024, $20,000,000 2025)... I mean I hope this gets better but fuck I don't know.
David Price ($32,000,000 2020, $32,000,000 2021, $32,000,000 2022)... I mean he had a good post-season out of the bullpen but his best season was 2018 and his ERA was only 3.58.
Nathan Eovaldi ($17,000,000 2020, $17,000,000 2021, $17,000,000 2022)... we all say how awful he was this year, didn't matter if it was out of the pen or starting he sucked.

The $79,000,000 you will be paying these three in 2020 got you a record of 15-17, 321.4 innings pitched and a combined ERA of 4.70.

$110,625,000 of salary for 2020 that didn't help you win at all in 2019.

Why even bring up fielding with JD? DH....worried bout opt out? He opted in because there is no market...

A few more doubles and HRs...Mookie has advantage in obp though...lmao i'll take the OPS....
