just use him to his strengths and he is invaluable for the team
the non existing system of carlo does not suit him and he ran him into the ground physically and then didnt sub him out when he was just about to be sent off (and that decision was wrong in fact)

pep used him far better as sweeper with some freedom to go forward and he was by far our best player in the ko stages under pep
