Multiple Unique Versions
Tal Rasha's AdjudicationRarity and QlvlEvery
set and
unique item has a designated rarity, i.e. drop frequency if the corresponding base item was chosen for the drop, and the roll for set or unique quality passed. Clearly then, rarity only matters if the base item has multiple set or unique versions, of which at least two can drop. If you have installed ATMA, you can find the relevant data in
SetItems.txt and
UniqueItems.txt (using values for v1.11; there were no drop mechanical changes in v1.12).
Level Termsclvl - character level
ilvl - internal level ("item level")
mlvl - monster level
qlvl - base item quality level
Qlvl - set or unique item quality level
For monster drops, ilvl = mlvl, always.
ilvl vs QlvlIf an Amulet is picked and the quality roll comes out
unique, the game proceeds to
- Look up all available unique Amulets, based on the ilvl (= mlvl, if a monster dropped it), excluding those with Qlvl > ilvl.
- Choose randomly between those satisfying ilvl >= Qlvl, according to rarity.
- Drop the result (unidentified).
Differences in rarity (higher ~ more common) and Qlvl explain why more than every 4th
Amulet is a
Nokozan Relic while only 1 of 38 ilvl 85+ unique Amulets will be a
Metalgrid. See the second table below.
GamblingCode
ilvl = clvl - 5 + rnd(10) , capped below at 5 and above at 99
From this, it should be impossible to gamble a particular
set or
unique any sooner than clvl = max{qlvl,Qlvl} - 4. Note that class-specific items are not available for gambling, with the exception of Assassin Claws.
Multiple Set Versions- Set pieces belonging in the same set share the same Qlvl.
- The same set item can drop more than once in one game.
The table lists minimum and maximum odds, given that a set item of the proper type (*item) was dropped.

Arctic Mitts 2) Light Gauntlets 20 7 3 50 (21+) 100 (3-20)

Iratha's Coil 2) Crown 29 7 21 50 (23+) 100 (21-22)
Milabrega's Diadem 2) (armo30) 7 23 50 50 (23+)
1) These can drop only in the Secret Cow Level. Set Heavy Boots from anywhere outside will be Sander's Riprap.
2) Notice: qlvl > Qlvl. In general, there is no relation between qlvl and Qlvl. The qlvl determines in which
item Treasure Class (TC) the base item belongs. The Qlvl is used to verify if the set drop was successful.
To keep it simple, consider a few examples from Normal. Radament is mlvl 19 and drops from TC 27. Mephisto
is mlvl 26 and drops from TC 33.
To drop the base item, TC must be >= qlvl. And to drop the set version, ilvl (= mlvl) must be >= Qlvl.
TC 27 contains armo21 (any kind of armor with qlvl 19-21). Hence, Radament can drop Arctic Mitts (Qlvl 3)
and Infernal Sign (Qlvl 7). His mlvl (19) restricts him from dropping Iratha's (Qlvl 21).
Crown (qlvl 29) belongs in armo30 which is contained in TC 33. Hence, Mephisto {mlvl 26} can drop either
set Crown (Qlvl 21,23).
Failed setEven when the check for set quality passes, it may happen that
- There are no set items to pick
a. The base item has no set version.
b. ilvl < Qlvl (in the case of multiple set versions, the lowest Qlvl).
Regardless, the game tosses a
double durability magic item, a "failed set". For details on the item quality selection process, see Aye's
Guide to the Basics of MF.
Multiple Unique Versions- A specific unique item can drop only once in each game.
So, you may get more than one Ring, but only one Raven Frost.
The following table is the unique equivalent to the table from the preceding section.

3) Ladder Only.
4) 2 of each element (Cold, Fire, Lightning, Poison), each having rarity 1; min% and max% refer to a specific one of these.
The odds of obtaining a -5/5 Rainbow Facet are 1 in 9 (~ 11.1 %); 1 in 72 (~ 1.4 %) if we further demand a specific one.
Failed uniqueSimilar to set items, it is possible to have the check for unique quality pass and yet
- There are no unique items to pick
a. ilvl < Qlvl.
b. The base item has no unique version.
c. There is no unique left for the base item; the available unique(s) already spawned.
In response, the game drops a
triple durability rare item, a "failed unique". Again, refer to Aye's
Guide to the Basics of MF.
Suppose, for instance, we mess around in Nightmare and the Goddess of Fortune decides to give us a
Nagelring and a
Manald Heal. Amazed by our luck, we head straight for Andariel {mlvl 49}. Notice, IF a Ring is chosen for the drop AND the unique roll passes, the odds of selecting
The Stone of Jordan in this scenario are 1:31 regardless. Spawned uniques are not removed from the selection process, only from the final drop process at the end. The remaining 30:31 occupied by
Nagelring and
Manald Heal would now result in a (triple durability)
Ring, a failed unique.
Technically speaking, it is therefore increasingly difficult to have multiple unique Rings drop in the same game.
But the essential point remains: IF a
Ring did drop in the above scenario, then it had to be
The Stone of Jordan, since it was the only one left.
Tal Rasha's Adjudication+2 to Sorceress Skill Levels, +50 to Life, +42 to Mana, and Lightning Resist +33 %, with a Qlvl of 26.
Wait, let's repeat that once more, so that nobody could possibly miss the point ... +2 to Sorceress Skill Levels on an Amulet which could be found in the middle of ...
Normal !?!?
Yes,
mlvl 26 is all it takes, so even the High Council {mlvl 28} or Mephisto {mlvl 26} could drop it in Normal. However, rarity 1 leaves the odds against us; an ilvl 26+
Amulet has just ~ 2-3 % chance of being
Tal Rasha's Adjudication.
