We have a bunch of red maple trees on or property.
Some friends spliced a piece of one and it grew green.
They did it again and it was green. The third one was red.
They now have two big green maples because they let them grow thinking they would be eventually red. They are not. This was 8 years ago. One is red out of three.

Thought I would share.

If splicing your own. Grow saplings first then keep the reds. This was weird
