Impale is used for 2 reasons:
always hits
big slow %
This is not a dps skill, it's a very good defensive mechanism against anything that needs ias.
On most builds, it's a 1 point wonder.
Makes a huge difference and can get you the edge over stronger melee opponents.
Unlike all other slows capped at -50%, impale is capped at -75%, for both EIAS and EFRW.
And it's a new slow source that can stack with all other different sources.
Oh and another difference is that this slow lasts 12s, and it can't be re-applied until it expired.
So, make sure you respond to melee telestomps with this skill, once, then get used to this 12s time frame where the slow is effective.
This is where hybrid or even tribrid builds become interesting.
You use impale vs IAS based, slow missile vs projectiles, then you enter guerilla mode with whatever offensive skills you want to use (bow, psn or light javs).
Personally, I like to use a 1pt guided arrow just to poke and apply OW and psn dmg.
Even if you deal zero phys dmg on hit, this is still a very potent bleeding effect over time.
Could be fired from a CTA matri bow, or something like riphook (30ias, 30% OW, 30% slow, 1os for either Um or Shael or Nef)
So far...
impale -> no hit check
GA -> no hit check
Both are 1 point wonders, leaving you with tons of points to maximize around either light or psn jav skills, and potentially try to also increase your d/a/e % chance.
And what's nice about those jav skills, either CS or plague? Even if both will attempt to perform a hit check, you don't really care if it does, cuz they deal most of their dmg even if they miss anyway.
So you don't need to care about your AR at all for all your skill set.
IMO, this is a build that shines more when you prioritize your defensive stats and playstyle over more offensive stats and aggression.
It's a build that can adapt to any matchup (some are harder ofc) and abuse slows and bleed effects over time, while being really hard to kill if played well.
I mean, you could build very differently than what I described above. There are as many zon builds as there are players.
But I've always had much better success with an approach that is more tactical, slow and defensive.
Even the hardest matchups can be countered, for example an aggressive telesmiter can be neutralized by stacking the slow from impale + gear, to a point where you can move out of range before he can even land a hit, while you can hit back with GA until the 12s timer of impale resets.
Very fun class, I encourage you to experiment, invest in items and keep them, you can have a wide arsenal and use many swaps from stash as it feels there is a solution to every problem you can face.
Good luck and have fun
