When you resurrect him and his gear has poofed it is display only, he is still wearing the same items, if you try and then equip an item you replace the one he is currently wearing, so no stacking exploit, trust me I tried :P

It appears the merc doesn't receive any stat bonuses from the 'poofed' gear, either.

It's still there, but it's invisible and doesn't give your merc any gear bonuses.
