Currently in grade 12 and teacher decided to assign a novel study. Need something that's suitable for a grade 12 level that'll also keep me interested. Generally interested in fantasy but I'll try anything, except maybe horror. Will need to pick a quote from the story that describes the main theme of the novel as well as give a 5-10 minute presentation on the theme, setting, a quick summary and the strengths/weaknesses of the writing style.

Suggestions?

well, not sure what grade 12 equates to ( had different school system) im guessing 12 years of school? ^_^

If so, even then its hard to suggest a book with your description
More info would be welcome: ( e.g - how much you usually read, are you iso a book thats easy to read and interesting so its easy for assignment, or can it be more complex? )
well, anyway, here a few suggestions ( if you still need):

-To kill a mockinbird ( cultural impact, lots to talk about)

-Painted House ( good topics, quite an easy read while maintaining some substance)>> quite possibly best option from my suggestions

-Eragon ( or either sequel) >> just a hash of other fantasies, but its a very easy read + fantasy ( which you say you like) >>interesting subject for presentation,
author wrote book when he was only 15 years old, gives you a good starting point to discuss his literary prowess vs age

If you up for bigger books i would recomend ( depends on how much time you have/how fast you read)

- Tommo & Hawk >>> ( quite long) but very good narration techniques the author uses, alot to choose from for presentation

-The Physician >> excellent book, a must read anyway ( but again, very long, might put you off) >>> no shortage of substance to discuss.

If you really lazy ( and have a lenient teacher ;) ) :

- The old man and the sea >> very short, but if you do a quick-ass presentation you can pull this off B)
Take advantage of the classic status this book has, the thousands of discussions/critical reviews this novel has had and come up with a original way of presenting it, you will save time reading, use that time for the presentation, alot can be said in 10 mins if well planned out ;) ( if you opt for this one ofc.)

Hope this was helpfull, if you like/need, i can suggest a few more :)

sorry for being vague. Grade 12 is the last year of high school here, so yes, 12 years of school. To kill a mockingbird is one of the books we read at this level but I can't use it because someone else has already chosen it. I'm looking for something with a theme I can discuss like womens rights or racism, etc.
I'm really open to any books, probably some classics or best sellers. Was thinking about picking up The Handmaid's tale, but open to suggestions.

Hmm womens rights....can't think of a good book of the top of my head...will think about it and add if i remenber something.
Try a painted house then, it touches the racism ( cultural as well as race) issues, also discrimination ( one could argue that its the same but nevertheless) and is a good read to boot :)

And ( you didn't say) if you not scared of big books, Tommo and Hawk as suggested above>> its long, but would be perfect example white/black ( don't want to give anything away, but you will be amazed, trust me), very good narrative techniques by author AND awesom story ( its the second book of a trilogy, but can be read separately)
feel free to pm me if you want more info :)
P.s haven't read your suggestion so can't comment ;)
