ive only read the night angel trilogy, out of the authors youve mentioned, and i can say it does compare to a song of ice and fire, although in a different sense

theyre both great and have lots of twists/schemes/extreme cahracter development, BUT

the main difference between a song of fire and ice and any other series is the grand scale of the world he has imagined.  it so more vast than anyone can explain which is why its hard to tell someone what its about

theres no main charaters, rahter five main bodies of power all thriving for the iron throne---so you can imagine the number of main characters---well over 15 and im only on book 4

the books are also wriitten in a very dark light, with a melancholy feel.  you wont finish chapters smiling, but rather feeling for the characters, turning pages with hope however knowning that the overall premise of the series is that the evil guy wins in real life and the good guy gets fucked --- literally

thanks, so gonna try get these books
sounds really interesting
got no books to read lately and resorted to playing video games... like urgh...

This, of course the titles for the last 2 aren't writ-in-stone. Unfortunately the author GRRM has been draging ass on his writting espically from book 4-5, book 5 just hit the 12th and just finished it few days ago, was much better than book 4.

Yeah I didn't really like book 4 as much. I'm only a few chapters into book 5 and I like it a lot more. Despite all my criticisms I still think it's a good series. And even though it would seem like it's more work on top of the books, I'm hoping that the HBO series will speed up his writing since I'm sure HBO won't want to stop the season at book 5 or 6 and have some down time before they can conclude. I think that would kill the series. Even if he waiting until the show caught up, that would really suck having to wait a few years for 6 then 7. I loathe waiting for a series to be finished.

I picked them up after watching the HBO series.  I find it a bit over-written but mostly entertaining.  I do have to say I find the pederasty disturbing.  Fairly graphic sex scenes involving a 13 year-old don't further the plot.  HBO didn't lose anything by letting us assume that participants were of age.  It's not like Martin is Nabokov here.  I get the distinct sense he is writing these scenes to amuse himself about how cool he is for trashing convention.

if he doesn't die by then! he has it all in his head-how the characters will come together and how it will end-he just needs to sit down and DO IT!

For ASoIaF - the last book was like reading a woman's romance novel.

The first three are "Epic", the last two released are merely "OK". I imagine Amazon and other reviews will reflect that. 5 stars for first 3, and I would imagine 2-3 stars for the last two.

Wheel of Time also starts off pretty good but by book 9 it really starts to drag on. Hate to say it but Sanderson really brought the books back starting with "A Gathering Storm". Jordan spent entirely too many words describing clothing too often and various other annoying uncessesary detail when the series was getting so LONG.

That said, they are among the best we have in the genre.

I always hear people say he spends too much time describing clothing etc.. but I never ever really notice it. I honestly think it's because I get so into the books and that is in turn because of his descriptiveness.

I mean he really pulls me into the book and it's because hes so damn descriptive it's like I'm actually seeing Rand's clothing, or the hills that Mat is over looking etc.

I think i am going to read the series, watched the tv shows and really enjoyed them.

Can anyone tell me what order to read these books in/ how many books are in the series?

thanks

also i hear Wheel of Time is a good series aswell, any oppinions if worth reading?

Ive started GoT and already finished WoT.

Wheel of Time is a great series, at times seems a little long winded, but most epics are.

Would reccomend both for sure :)
