One of the things suggested in my jitz practice is to take a cue from chess strategy.
Write down a list of things you can transition in to, if Plan A fails. Armbar failed, so go to triangle. Triangle failed, so go to... uh... something. :P (I'm only a white belt m'self, so it's still a work in progress for me.)
The idea is you make flash cards or a flow-chart for yourself, and you memorize it until it's second nature. That way, during a live roll, you already have a plan in place, if your first or second attempted technique doesn't work.
the armbar, triangle, and omo plata are all close brothers.
all three of them can sequence to one another. if you have a triangle locked and you cant tap the guy, hips up and adjust his arm for an armbar. if he takes the arm inside the triangle and loops it around your leg, move your hips and omo plata, he tries to bring his head in from the omoplata, re triangle.
