After being disappointed with the lack of world PvP in diablo 3, and the planned 'arenas', I am trying to find a new game to quench my pvp thirst.
It seems that games with a strong PvP element are not being made by big companies, possibly because of the unattractive game style for casual and non-pvp players, who make up the majority of buyers. The kind of PvP I (and I'm sure many other jsp fellows) like is ruthless, open world, kill anyone, anywhere kind. With limits of course, but a strong system there never the less.
Vanilla wow actually had some great world PvP, battlegrounds ruined it. For me PvP isn't just throwing 200 people into some place and making them fight it out. Its the unexpectedness, the thrill of the fight, the thrill of hunting, being hunted, diablo 2 style. If you have spent the time to make a GODLY char, you should be able to stand there and take low damage. If u have crap gear then you should prepare to get dumpstered - but can still try.
Well after that somewhat long introduction, can anyone recommend any games that bring back old style pvp? I know there's a few out there, but most of the time they are made by random Asian companies which will be dead in a month / overrun with botters / just not that fun. So is there such thing as a good pvp game that:
- will last a while, the company will prevent hacks and botters
- quite ruthless pvp, if I want to camp lowbies I should be able to. The game should be well enough designed that there's no real reason to, but the options there.
It seems like the games that do furfill the pvp needs, wont last, because probably not enough people will play them for the company to bother investing manpower into keeping the service good. And the games that all people play (diablo 3...) dont have pvp but have the great backing...
If graphics aren't a big concern, you may enjoy Tibia. Free world pvp after you get off the tutorial island aside from a few safe spots like spawns/banks/churches/boats.. can play either pvp enforced where the strongest rule the server and there is hardly any penalty to killing, or play open pvp, where there is a skulll system to keep people from nuking every noob they come across and only killing people worth their time..
but death can be painful.. you may drop one/some of the items you are wearing on death, and your backpack will always drop on death (assuming you aren't to the point that you are paying for blessings, which cost a bit but keep you from losing stuff). oh yeah, and as harsh as that sounds, it gets better... Death can make you actually lose levels. So if someone really makes you mad, you can kill them repeatedly and set them back days worth of leveling.
