About the speed test
What is throughput?
Throughput is the amount of data that can be transferred over your Internet connection at one point in time.

What are kbps?
kbps or Kilo Bits Per Second is the rate at which 1000 bits of data travels across your internet connection. A bit is the smallest unit of digital information. 8 bits make up 1 byte.

Why do I get different results when I run the test?
The test shows the current throughput you can get on your Internet connection. Factors such as network congestion and other downloads in progress can affect the available throughput.

I thought my broadband connection was faster?
The results of the test can be affected by any network congestion between you and our servers. If you have other downloads in progress this can also affect the results.

How do you know how fast my Internet connection is?
We calculate the speed of your Internet connection by calculating the time it takes to download a predefined set of data.

* Actual speeds may vary based on factors such as line quality, distance from exchange (for ADSL/ADSL2+), technology used, hardware capabilities, server route and network congestion.

You people are dumb as hell. You can game, even on shooters which use more bandwidth than MMOs, on a 64k ISDN connection just fine if you want to. Yea a 64k, all that matters is the latency and the tiny amount of bandwidth required which is gonna be about 5k/s under normal conditions maybe up to 10-20k in high traffic/raid situations. My first ever internet connection was a triple digit baud modem (thinking 600 baud) which couldn't be used for any form of gaming, not that much existed by today's standards. Eventually I upgraded to a 33.6 and then a 56k modem both of which were used for gaming (quake 1 team fortress) and put out playable pings around mid 100s to low 200s to servers within a few states of me. Finally it was 64k ISDN which is like ghetto adsl, then 128k (which, mind you, didn't reduce my pings AT ALL over 64k simply by doubling my bandwidth). You kids who have never used anything but cable / fios etc make me laugh.

Ya... The lowest internet speed offered in Australia is 256k and that is MORE than enough - as everyone is saying...

Basically if you are on ADSL and having latency issues it's not your bandwidth that's the problem. Contact your ISP tech support and they will USUALLY run you through some trouble shooting to indentify the issue and fix it.

By the sounds of it the OP is having latency issues even though your internet speed is actually quite fast, so I'd be doing this. Won't take more than 10 minutes and won't cost a cent.
