Games that took over 10+ years to make a follow up... Fail, just ask uncle Duke Nukem.

plenty of 100% free/unpopular MMOs stay afloat via microtransaction only

GW isn't free and includes microtransaction as well

P2P is only really working well for WoW.
Most of the other P2P games go F2P with Pay 2 Win cash shops!
Just look at SWTOR, it lost over 400 SUBS from 1,7 mil to 1,3, if that continues the game will
go F2P as well - probably with pay to win items because most companies are stupid and greedy.

ArenaNet are smart, and is marking their game as Buy 2 Play, with mostly cosmetic and boosts, not Pay 2 Win..

just my two cents.

pretty much league of legends idea, with their skins that change a certain champions appearance, I mean I spent 80+ dollars just to buy skins and I know many others who also have.

I think it'll work fine for them to keep a nice income.

aslong as theres no items with stats that you can buy or potions that give you boosts, I'll play it.

ye I spend a couple money on LoL as well, just to buy a few champions and skins.
I like the game, so I don't mind throwing a few coins in their face..

and if GW2 live up to the standards, I'll most likely do the same - they just need to keep their promise with no pay to win items :)

Yes, it must be a feat for a freemium game to make more money than a game that wouldn't have succeeded as p2p to begin with.

Oh wait.

People pay a subscription because they expect a game to have one. It doesn't cost shit to pay their employees and run the servers. Blizzard could pay everyone in their company and keep the servers running for every one of their games for like 5+ years on purchases for D3 alone.

P2P is just part of Blizzard's business plan to make WoW even more addictive and commercialised so that they can have the money rolling in without having to put much work into it. If you were to calculate their expenses and their incomes, you'd realise that P2P is just one big insane rip-off.
