Looks like Calgary is out of the playoffs now. Terrible management imo over the last few years.
In breaking down what they have done the past few years:
Signed Markstrom, who had high mileage and injury problems to begin with to a longer term/salary than anyone else was willing to offer.
Lost Tkachuk and Gaudreau. That line was dominant. Racking up points and was ~ +/- 60. Best line in hockey that season based of those metrics. When was the last time a line had all 40+ goal scorers? I can't even remember it's been that long.
In place of losing Gaudreau and Tkachuk they signed/traded for Huberdeau, Weegar, Kadri.
all three of those players were paid well above market value to come/stay in Calgary.
Huberdeau is getting paid 10.5 million until 2031 and has 12 goals......
Kadri has 46 points and will be 39 when his contract expires.
Weegar has 1 goal and is getting paid 6.25 million into his late 30's. I know offense is not the primary role of defenseman but that contract is already looking awful
Markstrom looks worn down and may not even be a capable #1 anymore. He is signed until 2026 at 6 million and will likely regress more.
Calgary is in cap hell and this is just the beginning.
Welcome. Pull up a seat. The Canucks are already sitting at the table
