Just put the deposit down on a new apartment in August. $1575/mo for 570 square feet on the 16th floor in a 17 story building. Ughhhh.
Moving on up from $1350 (will probably be $1425 next year) per month for 470, but with no amenities aside from a pool.

Nope. Wouldn't be able to afford it out here either. The apartment I live in right now (470 sqft) is about 350k-400k to buy.
There aren't any houses near public transportation and I'm sure as shit not going to drive in an hour of rush hour traffic every day just to have a lawn that I won't have time to take care of. Now once I move out of here in a few years, that might be a different story.

I hated living in an apartment. You in the DC area right? Traffic isn't really bad anywhere I live and there's no really good apartments worth the money. The benefits of living an hour outside of Toronto but none of the problems.

Yeah, I'm planning to move out of here in a few years once I hit the top of my salary ladder. I'll be at GS12 2 years from now making 80k and then I'm going to try and find a higher paying private industry job in a place where I can actually drive a car.
Right now I'm still driving the same car I got in junior year of high school, because it's pointless for me to spend a ton of money on a lease or a new car when I honestly only use mine to go to and from Costco once a month.

The nice thing is, with government, I could go to private industry for 10 years then when I come back I'm guaranteed the same salary level as when I left.

That's why I don't see the appeal of living in a big city. Driving is more of a chore than it is enjoyable. Keeping the same car isn't so bad, I had the same car since I was 16/17 until I "upgraded" recently. I like buying new cars but I like keeping the same one for awhile.
