Ofc it shows alot of interesting stories to come, but the whole ending was like... ummm w/e.

Yes, but that wasn't because of Sam. When Dean told him he would die finnishing the trails he responded with "So, what!?".
So actually, it was Dean who convinced that he couldn't do this without Sam, that he needed him. That they would "Find Another way, because they Always do".

Still lame considering the whole season was nothing but fillers and building suspense to close the gates... not showing even a remote chance of another possibilty.
