Play It Again, Sam is quite good, and would've been even better without the misplaced homage ending. Even though he didn't direct it, I'd consider it one of the first true Woody Allen movies because the characters are so similar to the ones he'd write later on. Willie Mays!

I loved this one and it is in my top 3 Woody Allen movies if not the best so far. I agree that the ending wasn't too great in a sense that I saw it coming before actually watching the movie but some of the dialogue was just awesome and his acting, although a bit over-the-top at times, was hilarious.

Watched Small Time Crooks just now and thought it was enjoyable. There wasn't much to the movie, really, but it did have some really funny moments.

Watched Shadows and Fog last night. I liked the style of the movie, I liked some of the lines, the references to Kafka was pretty awesome but it didn't jump out as a great movie to me. I'd say it's a 3.5 // 5.0.

Just finished his book The Insanity Defense.

Was alright, Allen fans may get a kick out of it but it's probably not worthwhile if you don't really enjoy his humor.

Watched Mighty Aphrodite last night.

I think it was pretty cool but I have to take into account my bias for both Woody Allen and for Sophocles on this one. I find his movies to be extremely esoteric and can understand why he isn't very well known outside a kind of cult following (with some exceptions, of course).

Recommended only for fans of Allen's and/or for fans of Greek theater/Sophocles.

He's easily one of the greatest directors in film history, as well as the greatest screenwriter to come out of the states - particularly when it comes to writing female characters.

I could sit here and recommend 30 of his films, but it'd be easier to tell you which to avoid and which are essential.

Avoid

Everyone Says I Love You (1996)
The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001)
Hollywood Ending (2002)
Anything Else (2003)
You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010)

Essential

Interiors (1978)
Stardust Memories (1980)
Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)
Radio Days (1987)
Another Woman (1988)
Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)
Husbands and Wives (1992)

Of course, you should watch them all, regardless of what I say.

Everyone says I love you is one of my favorite of his. Its funny and naive and the songs are such a treat

Just finished Everyone Says I Love You and I really liked it. It isn't esoteric like his others and I enjoyed a lot of the songs and choreography throughout the movie. Tim Roth was pretty good in this one and Drew Barrymore's perky breasts didn't disappoint. I thought a lot of the antics were a bit much and really detracted from the film (namely the ghost dance scene) but overall it is a solid movie.
