Just finished Play it Again, Sam.

Incredible. I laughed more during this movie than any other so far.

Just watched Whatever Works.

Some pretty damned good zingers in this one and I enjoyed the main character but the constant "I'm a genius" bit got old kind of quick. Overall I consider this a 3.5 // 5.0

EDIT -- I just read a review on RYM which made the argument that the film was disproportionately hostile towards Christianity, which I can see. I happen to have a strong bias against Christianity, myself, but I do have to agree it distracts from the overall movie.

Just finished Hannah and Her Sisters.

Now, I went into this one with incredibly high hopes and I felt a little let down, overall. I really, really enjoyed Woody's character and thought that without his character and his somewhat external theological dilemma the movie would be much worse and would amount to little more than a vanilla love story slash "coming to age" story. There were some aspects which I don't think I fully understood, such as the artist that one of the sister's dated, although his character did make a rather blatant argument in the movie completely independent from the plot (or was it? I don't know)....

Anyway, I give this one a generous 3.5 // 5.0 stars. Michael Caine's character was pretty awesome, Lewis Black being in the movie was a plus although he was basically a glorified extra, etc.

I don't see it as a coming-of-age story at all. It is about love, sure, but more importantly it's about jealousy, disability to cope, immaturity and disillusionment. Sometimes all you need in a drama is compelling characters, and there's about a half a dozen in that film. To each his own, but I think it's one of the best films ever made, and I wouldn't even rank it among his top 3.

I still highly recommend Broadway Danny Rose, Sweet and Lowdown and The Purple Rose of Cairo. Of his films you haven't seen, I think these are most in line with your tastes.

I guess I refer to the cocaine snorting pun rock fan in the movie who seems to mature through her writing.

I'll be looking into those, eventually, I think I've already downloaded two of them.

So I see he directed and acted in a movie starring Owen Wilson that was released this year, does anybody have any details about this? The IMDB score is 8.1 // 10.0, I think, and I like Owen Wilson so I have high hopes for this one.

I wrote this about it:

"A significant step-up from You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Midnight in Paris is Allen's best film in years. Instead of romanticizing New York City like he's been doing for the past 40+ years, Allen takes us to the City of Lights for a sweet, low-key fantasy tour through what the lead character considers to be the city's golden age, the 1920's, only to have him discover that life as he knows it is as good as it ever was. The great artists of the past are each given their own idiosyncratic turns, giving the film a playful vibe, and many of the funniest scenes come as a result of their chance meetings with Gil. It's a terrific companion piece to his earlier fantasy film The Purple Rose of Cairo, even with its all-too-precious ending, and offers an insightful look at many of our dearest fantasies."

It's a good film, but still third tier Allen.

In my opinion, if a director can make a decent film 4 decades after his first film that is pretty astounding.
